I thought getting a 4K monitor would be a good idea for my hackintosh, since I’m used to a 5k display on my iMac. I was wrong. The “best for display” renders at 1080, which is ridiculously huge. I can scale the display to 2560x1440, but it’s nowhere near as crisp or sharp as the iMac display

I’m wondering if a 2k monitor, that actually does 2650x1440 resolution, would give me a sharper display.

Considering this one - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YGZL8XF/?tag=tonymacx86com-20

I’m very happy with my hack, except I just can’t get past this damn fuzzy text. That stupid 5k display really spoiled me, and I didn’t even realize it.

The 2k resolution was standard on 27" iMacs for awhile and so is a good compromise IMHO. I run two such monitors side-by-side. I don't think my old eyes can tell the difference from these and the 5k iMac at work. Just make sure to get nice monitors. The Dell Ultrasharps are very good. I really like my Asus ProArt 27". These are lower frequency monitors for general work (60-75Hz), not gaming monitors like the one you linked to.

Thanks for the info.

To be fair, it's pretty difficult for my 37 year old eyes to notice any difference in the monitors unless I've got the same thing on both screens to compare, or if I look very closely at certain UI elements. It's very noticeable on places like the Finder titlebar, however. I guess I'll grab that monitor and hope it's not too late to return this 4k one :)

What about a 24" @ 4k ?
The old Dell P2415Q or the slightly newer LG 24UD58

I have dual 27 Samsung 4k monitors at scaled 4k text looks perfectly fine not blurry or fuzzy to my 42 year old eyes. My last eye check said my vision was still 20/20. I do not have a Retina to compare with but the text is totally crisp to my eyes. I also see no difference when I choose any other scale offered 2560x1440, 3008x1692, 3360x1890!

I have a 28" UHD (3840 x 2160px) Samsung display on my 2013 hackintosh and the 4K is running well, the text is smooth, I'm not able to see the pixels unless I look really close and I don't feel it is fuzzy or at least considering the size of the display I think I'm getting the best of it.
I don't use "Best for display" because it is too big, but I use scaled, second from the left, it says equivalent to 2560 x 1440.
If I take a full screen screenshot, it is 5120 x 2880 px wide.

We likely have the same monitor I said 27" but I think it is 28" U28E590. When I bought these monitors they were $299 on sale at Best Buy like 6 years ago! Then I bought a third one for my wife it was a floor model but I paid $160 for it, was a steal.

Yes it's the same.

Font rendering on Macs have always been blurry.
And font sharpness on Macs depends on pixel density, not on resolution by itself.

iMac 27" 5K has pixel density 217 ppi.
MacBook Pro Retina 13" 2560 x 1600 has 232 ppi.
28" 3840 x 2160 28" has 157 ppi.
27" 2560 x 1440 monitor has 108 ppi. It's pretty low.

Google "pixel size calculator".
