I'm curious to a safe limit for over clocking a 2500k on a z68 motherboard.

I'm currently at 4.01 Ghz and all i did was change the CPU clock from 33 to 40

I want to run at least 4 really, but i want to do it properly and safely.
Hopefully i can run these speeds on stock cooling.

Thanks.
Ryan

I wouldn't advise it if you live in a warm climate.
The stock coolers are not designed for overclocking.
Invest in a heatpipe cooler, even something like Coolermaster's TX3 will do the job nicely.

Its not exactly warm in the uk.
so would it be safe to run around 4ghz stock?

In the bios the core temps are about 51-54

Well, that's in the BIOS, i.e. idle, try running something CPU intensive for 10 minutes, touch the heatsink and let me know if it's safe...

My CPU runs at around 20-30 degrees idle, but then again, I'm using watercooling...

Idleing with windows running in the 40's, seemed low to me, thought there was plenty of headroom for cpu heavy activity

can you recommend adequate cooling for a good price?
I want to spend as little as possible really.

I'd happily take the cpu up to 4.7, 4.8 if i could.

But i don't want to go nuts unless i know I'm not doing any damage.

EDIT:
Did some stress testing, after 100% load it was hitting 86c.
I think it needs cooling, if you can advise a good one for about £20-£30
That can handle 4ghz and maybe a bit more.

using Noctua NH-D14 in my power mac g5 clocked at 4.2 1.290v ambient temp @ 24c idle temp 33c prime 95 for 1 hour 68-69c. I would try and stay under the 70c mark.

I'm liking the look of the suggestions so far.

What if i wanted to try and reach the peak limit of my CPU am i looking at needing water cooling?

Think i'll be investing in a Fan soon, possibly water cooling.
We'll see what sort of funds i have.

Thanks for your help guys.

Peak limit? LN2 mate...

You can't overclock your CPU that high on air or water, maybe with a cascade cooler, but I can't see you being a semi-professional overclocker...

You'd be lucky to get that chip much over 4.6 on Air/Water, some rare chips do 4.7...
