this is an older post now but I had the exact same issue, have a RAT7 mouse from saitek, switched to a logitech and the difference was night and day.

that got me in! now I have 2 hard drives that i cannot format from the boot disc or when in mavericks (erase and first aid are gone and everything in partition is greyed out) also my audio is only playing from the left stereo speaker?
