I put up a new post here with the particulars. My new Precision has an i7-10700 and a 460W PSU. :) Thanks for taking a moment to comment here, I really appreciate it.

Still trying. Updated EFI and log file attached, along with photos of the text.
I'm working through the Comet Lake installer guide here: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/config.plist/comet-lake.html and the text on screen goes all corrupted-looking with a prohibited sign...
Turns out the Opti only has a 260W psu and can’t be easily upgraded. That plus the Dell DVMT BIOS thing for onboard graphics tells me I should move on; I’ve ordered a Precision 3650 instead. :)

I'm totally stealing that PLIST for my (not yet shipped) Optiplex 7090 with i7. :) I feel good about my chances; those are effectively identical chipsets.
I guess not, just tried it that way and got the same behavior. Is there a "verbose" boot mode or a log somewhere that I can use to see what's happening?

I'm following this guide. I have successfully:
Downloaded the Mac OS installer on my old MacBook Pro
Generated a bootable USB stick
Booted the Alienware
Selected the Boot macOS Install from Install macOS Catalina
Seen the black screen...
