I tried to boot the installer like you did. I got the same result. Then I got really busy so that's where I left it. I know this doesn't help you solve your problem, but it should at least make you feel like you're not alone.

I have the y50 and it does have intel graphics. There's a guide for it for Mojave. I was about to try it but I do need that computer for work.
