Well, thank you all very much for your suggestions! I managed to get to the installer. I think what clinched it was rockingwaggy's suggestion about setting video memory to 1024; I also set XHCI mode back to disabled as suggested, but I don't think that's what made it work, as I had already tried...- wildschwein

One thing I don't know is how I could go back to 10.9.2 if I already updated my Mavericks Installer app to 10.9.3... but other than that, I'll be able to try all of your suggestions.
