Did you manage to resolve this issue? I have the same problem with my Skylake build when using iMac17,1 sysdef. With iMac14.2 disks and USB sticks are mounted correctly. PS: Sorry for digging this thread out!

Can you report that you have been able to boot from NVMe device more than once? For me it only booted once and after shutdown it didn't boot no more.
