10.6 is nearly 5 years old now and you'll have a hell of a time trying to run through the upgrade process. Your much newer hardware will probably not work well with 10.6 causing you to waste a lot of time struggling with any unforeseen problems.
Your best bet is to get your hands on a Mavericks...
^If your issue with the bootloader is the boot0 error
Boot off your USB and enter the OSX installer
Open Disk Utility and unmount your system disk
Close Disk Utility and open Terminal and enter this
dd if=/usr/standalone/i386/boot1h of=/dev/disk0s2
Now exit Terminal and reboot
