Nice find. The GTX 960 should give performance approximately on par with a GTX 770.

Sounds good to me! The community here is great!

Has anyone tried Wake-On-LAN successfully with any version/form factor of the HP Compaq 8300 series?

I get my 8300 delivered tomorrow; desired end result: WOL with iOS app such as WakeUP....so I'll be diving into the BIOS asap between this project, work, & adulting...

I've been reading up on WOL with this model, getting mixed answer whether is does or does not support in a windows environment. Even rarer to even attempt to ask the question for mac OS X environment....

Forgot to mention, I'm willing to buy compatible NIC/PCI card, preferably 1GB/speed if need be in order to implement WOL...

I tested WOL briefly and it wasn't working for me. I did not have a chance to test other ethernet drivers.

Thanks Chef! Which version of OSX are you guys running on your 8300 machine?

I'm trying to decide between which road I should go down: Sierra or El Capitan.

I started with El Capitan and upgraded to Sierra.

I decided to finally cave in & get a ASUS Gtx-950 Strix from new egg. (THX TRS96!) Offer is too good to pass up! I'll let you know if it shuts down / absorbs all the power from the PSU. (which would suck!!!)

I was originally going to get: EVGA GTX 750 Ti SC (link below) but I knew immediately after placing the order, that I should just cancel & get the ASUS, I really do no know what to expect from the ASUS!

This is the adapter I used to connect 2 SATA power cables to the 6-pin power on a MSI GTX 950 card I'm using.

The card I'm using is only rated at 90W, and it's been working great so far.

Good luck!

Here's an update to this very popular Deals of the Day Thread first posted in April of 2016

1-15-17 (Nearly 11,000 views )

Prices have come down (50-70 dollars) on the I5 versions of these as the supply has increased.

Check on Newegg.com for the seller Nationwide Surplus

The link to these on Newegg.com is in the first post of this thread. Entry level price is now $149.99

You'll probably want to replace the HDD with an SSD. Also a compatible graphics card is required. This I5-3470 only has
HD2500 and not HD4000 graphics.

For a ram upgrade get a Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 kit. Either 2 x 4GB or 2 x 8GB depending
on what your usage will be.

One benefit of having 16GB or more of RAM is being able to comfortably run multiple VMs, if you do that type of thing ;)

Thank you everyone for this post, and for sharing all of this important info!!

I am in the process of building/buying my first PC/hackintosh. It is going to be used solely for video editing and 3D modeling (AE & C4D). Luckily refund time is around the corner, and I am going to have $400 to start on my journey of building my first PC, and have been spending a lot of time looking at these HP machines. I want a computer with a fast processor and a decent GPU. Right now I do all of my hobby compositing on a 1.3ghz 4gb ram macbook air, so I am sure whatever I move to next will be better. I guess my question to everyone on this thread was what machine would you buy if you had 400 to start building a video editing PC that I can work on until I can save up additional funds to buy everything.

Am I putting my priorities in the right order?

1. CPU
2. GPU
3. RAM
4. SSD
5. everything else

I have looked at these two options that were recommended on this post

hp 6300 pro

I want something that I can eventually put $500 worth of additional upgrades into. (SSD's, 16GB RAM, better GPU)

Although I have looked at these boards for the last 4 months or so, I still feel like I know very little about what the best deal for my situation would be. I appreciate any help you may have!

I have looked at the GTX950, and the 1050ti, but I saw somewhere on here that the 1050ti isn't compatible with hackintosh builds.

Thanks,
Jake

The HP PCs in this thread are not ideal for an editing build because of the PSU and graphics card limitations. They are mostly intended as starter systems for those without much money or time to try out a hackintosh. So if you want to do some serious video work with FCP X or Premiere Pro they are probably not the best choice. If you will just use iMovie then they are fine.

If you want brand new hardware I would go with a Kaby Lake mATX system with an I5-7500. Save up the money for all the extra stuff and buy it when you can. Kaby Lake already works with a few tweaks and should be fully supported later this year.

For a video editing build $400 is a very limited budget. The bare minimum you'd need is about $600 for a full system. The above mobo and CPU will be just under $300 and will give you more longevity for your system. It can be upgraded to a greater degree later on. A Crucial 2 X 4 GB kit is around $55 and you can get a 120 GB SSD for about $45 to get you started close to your budget limit for now.
