Hi,
I succeeded clean installing Catalina on my HP Desktop.
Still, the display control panel offers NO options at all.
I have a Radeon HD6870, I even replaced it with a an Apple/Radeon GP : same result.
In both cases "About this mac" shows : 3 MB vram !...
Any idea ?

I'm despaired. The "Phenix Secure Core Technology" BIOS on this machine is VERY basic. Can't access to the extended parmaters of it ! Hence, can't do nothing. How did you do ?!

I have the same issue w. my Medion AKOYA X7811 :
When an external monitor is connected, the screen of the LapTop is black.
When NO external monitor is connected, works fine. Even if my cursor can move virtually on the external monitor !

When tryng to install El Capitan from scratch, it kept refusing the install, arguing that it couldn't unpack essentials.pkg.
I replaced my single 8GB RAM (that had been working fine for a year w. Yosemite) and, voilà ! it went fine on the following attempt.
Watch your RAM...
