    What video card to buy?

Ugh, after a debacle the other night (don't ask -- it'll save us all aggravation), I'm sticking to a re-install of Sierra. MSI Radeon RX 570 w/GDDR5 is not a happy camper evidently... At this point, I'm just looking to get the machine functional again while awaiting a new 'for reals' iMac in a...

    What video card to buy?

Some context is necessary. Eight years ago, or therebouts, I put together a clone of Slugnet's Video Editor. It's been a champ of a workhorse in the interim - currently 32GB RAM and 3TB of drivespace. The venerable nVidia GTX 660Ti has finally given up, and I just want to replace that card at a...

What do you do for work

Statistician/modeler, turned Software Dev. Too many technologies to count over 35 years. Built home Windows machines forever, switched to build a Hackintosh as the new home machine in 2010 when work laptop became a MacPro for iOS work , haven't looked back. The last Windows machine I built now...

Do You Game on Your Hackintosh?

Gaming??? battlefront.com - The entire Combat Mission series; tactical level WWII wargaming at it's finest. No power-ups, no hit points. Serious math behind the scenes; akin to Avalon Hill's Squad Leader all grown up in a 3d environment with accurate modeling. Good graphics (the mods community...

UniBeast: Install OS X El Capitan on Any Supported Intel-based PC

Nice. Couple of trouble spots, all worked around. First was plain strange - used a 128GB SanDisk Cruzer Glide USB drive ('cause it was handy) - UniBeast wouldn't recognize it. Scrounged up a SanDisk 16GB USB, that one worked fine. Remainder of steps were fine until it came time to try and...

    MultiBeast 7.0 Update

Awesome work guys. Once I made it past a few SUE's (stupid user errors), things are cruising right along.

What Monitor or Display Do You Use?

Two Samsung SyncMaster S23B550. My Hack outputs to HDMI1 on both by default. Mac Mini on the desk outputs to HDMI2 on first monitor for when I have to fiddle with home movie/music library that feeds the AppleTV upstairs (the Mini's iTunes account, not my mine since I have stuff not age...

    OS X 10.9.1 Update

Easy-peasy (clone of Slugnet's Video Editor). Backup. Download. Install. Grab new Multibeast. Redo the sound update for ALC898. Thanks again to the tonymacx86 crew for the continuing support, and up-front research to keep my hack humming along on the latest and greatest.

UniBeast: Install OS X Mavericks on Any Supported Intel-based PC

You guys are freakin' awesome. My build is essentially "Slugnet's Video Editor", and the steps were flawless (as soon as I remembered how to get around the MultiBeast "This app isn't from a known developer" by right-clicking to open). While the IT guys at work yammer and hesitate to let us...

Rumor: Haswell Retina MacBook Pro This Month- Return of 17" MBP

I'd love to see a 17" Retina -- that was the only disappointment to going to a Retina MBP last year, the forced downsize to 15". Modern IDEs are profligate in their use of screen real estate. Enough that when working from home I routinely borrow two monitors from my Hack.

Time Machine Backup and Recovery on a CustoMac

I have my wife's iMac on a Time Machine backup, defaults are fine for her use. My hack backs up to a separate 2TB drive when I want it. After a working session, I'll back it up then, but while I'm at the day job, and the hack is cranking on SETI@home, I see little reason to waste clock cycles...

What Monitor or Display Do You Use?

Samsung SyncMaster S23B550 X 2, both on DVI from the EVGA GeForce 660Ti 2GB. Good video real estate at a good price.

NVIDIA Launches New Range of Professional Quadro Kepler GPUs

That's just sick. Adding a K5000 would triple the cost of my hack. *boggle*

    Building a CustoMac: Buyer's Guide March 2013

The HAF XB is indeed a great case for a build if you have the space. Super easy build and the great airflow dropped my temps from 56 at idle to mid 30s. The old case was far too cramped, and I replaced the Intel cooler with a nice CoolerMaster.
