That sucks I know on some laptops you can boot from an sd card....
I'm not at home at the moment so I can't test it myself.
Is there a boot option(with the usb/hd/DVD/lan screen) for the card reader when pressing f6(I think) when on bios screen?
also have you tried changing the boot order...
I don't know the answer to your question but maybe a suggestion if you get stuck and don't want to use usb...
I don't know whether you could get chimera to boot from a sd card in the front card reader slot?
Although a ultrabook was ideally what I was looking for I am very happy with the look of the Hp probook. It reminds a lot of a macbook pro
I pretty much have it 100% working now all I need to do is
get the 9 cell battery for £85 then I will have overs 6 hours battery life.

I had a similar problem and went round and round in circles...
if the WiFi light is white then make sure you turn it on in the network
preferences page...
