hello community.
i tried to update my hacintosh but without luck..

tried to update with this procedure:

Updated
I recommend the Combo update instead of the store incremental update. My procedure is to

  1. Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility on the drive to be updated;*
  2. Backup your current system with Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper;
  3. If you're using the "USB 3 - Universal" (Zenith432's GenericUSBXHCI.kext), remove it from S/L/E folder**;
  4. If you've not done a fresh install recently, you should remove npci=0x3000 from the /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist file;
  5. Run the Combo Update - don't reboot yet;
  6. Run the latest MultiBeast to reload only the audio driver;
  7. Download the GenericUSBXHCI.kext and install using Kext Utility;
  8. Reboot; and
  9. Repair Permissions again.*

If sleep/wake-up is not properly working, try removing "darkwake=0" from the Kernel Flags in the /Extra/org.chameleon.Boot.plist file.

** Zenith432's GenericUSBXHCI.kext has been reported to cause Kernel Panels on some motherboards after the update. Note: If your motherboard has Intel USB3, then you don't need the GenericUSBXCHI.ket as USB3 will be natively supported.

...

but
1. the combo updater always fails..
2. multibeast installation afterwards fails too.
3. i tried to copy the new 10.8.5 with unibeast to usb stick. failed too..

after the failed installation i tried to reboot, and the comp freezes with the apple logo.. i tried to delete the genericusb..., then i tied to replace it with the one of the cloned hdd.. nothing worked..

my motherboard is a z77-up4, i7 3770k, 32gb ram, gtx680 4gb, mac osx 10.8.4

thx for your help

Success!!!! GAZ77-3DSH Main Board Version 1.1 Running Stock Video Got it update to 10.8.5

Updated Through App Store. Combo would not work. Ran multibeast 5.5 Could only boot with the -F
Change the <string>npci=0x3000 darkwake=0 PCIRootUID=1</string> Change the 0x3000 to 0x2000
Rebooted and it booted fine but lost HD Video. Ran Multi Beast 5.51 Ticked Appleintel 10.8.5 and apple graphics patch.

Finally worked. Do not know actually why but it did. If anyone can explain please let me know.

Add me/my system to the "weird-but-worked" category:

-I repaired permissions, restarted and installed combo update.
-Combo update finished with the "Install failed" message.
-I ran Multibeast 5.5 at that time anyway. It said it 'failed.'
-After restart system showed 10.8.5. Sound not working.
-Ran multibeast again, this time with just the non-DSDT ALC892 for sound checked. Installer said it 'failed' again.
-Re-started and everything is working fine as far as I can tell.

So, success....I guess?

[E.T.A. I don't use USB3 so can't check that]

Same Problem for me on my GigaByte GA-Z68XP-UD3 with SAPPHIRE Radeon HD6870.
I also can not install the iTunes update.

Not sure if this has been covered previously however I was wondering if anyone else has issues with external USB HDDs getting disconnected after a period of time. It looks like 10.8.5 has a bug. I definitely encounter the issue. Not sure if it's a problem if they are being connected through eSATA. I'll give it a shot to see if that's the case. In any event, I have found the following upon a brief search on the Internet:

Sounds to me like a bad USB Drive - I might be wrong. Try to reformat it, and try install again. This last attempt for me I had to create a new uni beast cause mine got corrupted somehow.

Over the years I had several Corsair red thumb drives has disconnected and reconnected just like the issue you are having. They are good for 1-2 years then I send them back to be replaced.

Maybe test an external USB device you know if good 1st, and see if it stays mounted. If it does replace your USB thumb drive. Red Patriot thumb drives are incredible - never failed me winows or mac - knock on wood. Give them a try next time.

I am not able to send you a PM. it seems that in order to do that I have to have 50 posts to be granted PM Privledges. /sigh/

So, I have 2 choices, 1. Spam the boards to get 50 Posts... 2. Post here asking you to help without being able to PM (not sure what that lame rule is all about).

I am a pretty quite guy and just trucking along with my Hackintosh, so opting for the spam attack to get to 50 isnt appealing. Hope there is some advice for my issue :)

So, I completely forgot I was on a Hackintosh (have many other Macs in the house) and just hit update. Now, when I boot up, I am presented with the Apple Logo and after a while, the Circle with a diagonal hash through it.

Any ideas are welcomed. Otherwise, looks like I will be rebuilding....from scratch.
Thanks for getting back! I've got good news......problem SOLVED!!!

Just wanted to post solution for UD5 X79 board update to 10.8.5. After much headache and help from thanos4 its working again - thanks thanos4!

Maybe this will help someone else with the X79 board?

Ok here it goes -I did a fresh install of 10.8.5, and I had to use bootflags in UniBeast by pressing space bar then enter "-v -x GraphicsEnabler=No npci=0x3000 cpus=1"

BTW it should be noted lease note my GTX 650ti card was in the far right slot closest to the CPU. Also have 6 core 3930K CPu -Not sure what video card others use or what slot they have it in, and or cpu but this boot flag worked for me.

Once in desktop, I ran the below MultiBeast 5.5.1 settings for theUD5 X79 with GTX650ti:

1: Under Customization checked GraphicsEnabler=No since I could not boot properly without using that boot flag
2: Instant Menu
3: Easy Beast
4: audio 898 (without DSDT)
5: hnak for network
6: trim enabler 10.8.3 (if you have ssd - I do have a OCZ Vertex 4 and love it)
7: appleACPIplatform rollback-to 10.8.1 Rollback
8: ssdt options-sandt bridge core i7
9: Adjust org.chameleon.Boot.plist in the string in the <string>darkwake=0 </string> line to include "npci=0x2000"like so <string>darkwake=0 npci=0x2000</string>"
10: I added generic usb kext that stork recommends via the kext utility tool from post 2.
11: Did a repair disk permission in disk utility.

Now everything works flawlessly ....sound...network. ..ssd - I have RME fireface 800 audio hardware so I dont mess with junky on board audio anyway

Just FYI here is my working org.chameleon.Boot.plist in case it helps some other poor fool update the UD5 X79 board to 10.8.5:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
	<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
	<key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
        <string>No</string>
	<key>Kernel</key>
	<string>mach_kernel</string>
	<key>Kernel Flags</key>
	<string>darkwake=0 npci=0x2000</string>
	<key>Legacy Logo</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
        <key>Instant Menu</key>
        <string>Yes</string>
	<key>UseKernelCache</key>
	<string>Yes</string>
</dict>
</plist>

Also

Ethernet:

Type: Ethernet Controller
Bus: PCI

Device ID: 0x1503
Subsystem Vendor ID: 0x1458

Kext name: AppleIntelE1000e.kext
Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleIntelE1000e.kext

This was a pain in the neck and a waste of time! Glad its working now but would never have updated had I known it would be such a pain in the brown eye. Really appreciate everyones help!!

BTW Geekbench =16371

Going to add 6 core cpu flag and adjust the ram - five tune and tweak - going to try and get back mac pro 5.1 system def as well...etc

Yeah, unfortunately I have already done that i.e. reformatting. And we are talking about 2 HDDs in the same enclosure. Both of them are getting spit out by OS X after a while :( Unless the enclosure has a specific issue with OS X, the coincidence and the numerous similar complains are too strange. The same enclosure and HDDs have been flawless under 10.8.4 and currently under Ubuntu. Based on the above it makes me think it may be an incompatibility between 10.8.5 and the enclosure or a bug in 10.8.5
