Article: Exploring Alternate Bootloaders

Im using the latest Chimera bootloader. Does anyone know if there is a way to rearrange the OS order? I would like to have my OS's listed in a certain order but my Windows drives/Partitions display in a different order. Also, is there any way to disable certain drives from displaying as a boot volumes in the bootloader?

Chameleon is my 1st bootloader and then Chimera. Thank you for that. But when I read Clover forum and begin the experiment, I am surprised what Clover capable doing. Just sharing my point of view. Sorry for my english. I am Indonesian.

I use Chimera, its very good for me, both on uefi and non uefi cards. I tried both Chamelion and Clover without any major problem. I was hoping that Clover could help me inject a ATI 7750 on my sons comp, but so far I could not make Clover go any further than Chimera wich means boot with Unibeast and do a sleeptrick. Maybe someone more clever has a good idea? But until then I will stay with Chimera.

You can control if a drive shows or doesn't show by adding a HIDE element to org.chameleon.Boot.plist. Sorry I don't know how to control the order in which drives show.

How difficult is Clover to use, for someone that has always used Chimera?

In gparted (linux) you can change flags on partitions, I don't know if removing the boot flag will make them invisible to chimera/chameleon but it may be worth a shot. You can boot with a live cd of ubuntu or mint they will have gparted for sure, but be careful not to disable or delete some important partition. Good luck :)

Thanks man! I actually figured out how to HIDE drive on the bootloader by adding a Hide Partition string into my boot.plist. Im good to go!

Easy to setup, boots all three, and you're satisfied - how could something suit you even better?! Make a cup of tea whilst giving you a foot massage? ;)

We have 10 systems running chimera and they boot flawlessly.

We just put a new system together with Chimera (a triple boot, OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.3, Win 7 and Win 8). Usually we put all the operating systems on different partitions on the same drive. On this machine OSX is on one SSD and Windows OS's are on another. We are running into a problem that the Windows operating systems show on the chimera boot screen but when i try to boot to either Windows OS, it says, "bootloader missing". I ran chimera after everything was installed again to see if that would help. Could it be a bios issue? I have the boot priority for the OSX drive. Any ideas how to fix this?

Can you take a pic of your bootloader menu and post here? You need to take into account that the boot records are stored in the "System Reserved" partition which is hidden in Windows but will show up in the chimera bootloader. You may also want to try disconnecting the Mac SSD and just see if it will boot the Windows SSD. If it dies, reconnect the Mac SSD and mac sure you have set the BIOS to boot to that HD first. If Windows still doesn't boot when the Mac HD is disconnected, you may want to try reinstalling Windows without the Mac HD connected. Once all is good with Windows, then reconnect the Mac HD as I mentioned above. Hope this helps...

Problem solved. You gave me the answer without mentioning it specifically. The key is the "System Reserved" partition that Windows 8 apparently installs. In the past on my other systems I always had the option of choosing the Win 7 installed partition on the hard drive from the Chimera boot screen and it would boot to Win 7 on all these other systems that did not have Win 8. On this system it installs that partition with Win 8 and the answer to get it to boot was to choose the System Reserved partition from the Chimera screen to get into Win 7 and 8. When you choose that, you get a screen which lets you choose Win 7 or Win 8. You telling me the boot loading file was there was the key. Thanks

I hope this helps others who may run across this.
