HD Caddy for HP Probook 4530s and SSD Harddisk question

Hey guys! This is the fourth or fifth time I have posted this question since the whole 4530s has started and still no answer. One of the first things I did when I got my 4530s was install the OEM 320 GB rotational drive into an optical bay hard drive caddy. I replaced the original drive with a 256 GB Crucial C300 SSD.

I've been triple-booting Snow Leopard, Lion, and Windows 7 Enterprise off the SSD and using the rotational drive as storage. My problem is whenever I boot Windows 7 and shut it down, my computer doesn't fully shutdown. The powerlight will stay on, the fan will stay on, and the orange wifi light will stay on. Everything else will be shutdown, including the blinking white light by the SD card slot.

I've never had this problem with Lion or Snow Leopard with both harddrives in. I also have never had this problem with Windows 7 when I only have one harddrive in with the DVD drive in the optical slot. On few occasions when both harddrives have been in Windows fully shutdown without any lights or fans remaining on.

Since a lot of the people in this particular thread have done the same thing as me, I was wondering if:

1) anyone else is experiencing this?
2) anyone has a fix for this?

All the help is greatly appreciated. Btw, I have already tried different settings in the BIOS, resetting it to factory, and even do clean installs of Windows. I even went as far as using the Windows (ugly) bootloader. Still nothing! Thanks in advance.

Inmike09, on my 4430s I have the same issue as you from Windows 7 (dual boot with Lion). It doesn't matter where the OS drive is placed - in the regular hard drive slot or in the caddy. As long as both are connected and you shutdown from Windows 7, it'll behave as you have described. I'm not sure what to do right now but I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the laptop's bios causing the issue...I'm currently running F.09 as F.20 breaks the Fingerprint software in Windows.

why is that? i have win7 on a partition and the Fingerprint software works and i have F.20

That's what I had read on the notebook forum, here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-hp-probook-4430s-4530s-owners-lounge-70.html

Once updated, bios can't be reverted back, so I was wary of not updating. Now that I know it's not the case, I probably should update for best practice. Thanks xequtor!

thank you

good luck to me :)

nikstar,

this is a pic of the caddy or the optical drive with the front plate removed?

The clips on the optical drive are in exactly the same place and are identical.

Use the photo or the caddy door once removed for a reference of where the clips are on your optical drive.

1 pops out very easily and 1 will make you think it's going to snap if you pull it any harder but it doesn't.

Good luck

I have 4 different osx installs on my internal hd and windows on my 2nd hard drive and I never have this problem. Maybe it's related to you having ssd's? or maybe it's because windows is on internal drive I don't know but I definitely don't have this problem.

so i removed the bottom cover
then removed the 1 screw holding the optical,
then began to slide optical out
it just comes out a little, and then no more
it's like it's stuck ??

i don't want to push the drive too hard as i may put too much pressure on the facelplate and break it?

am i missing something,
why doesn't this drive slide out? what's holding it back?

anyone?

so i got optical out
put in SSD with caddy

i'm afraid to snap off the hp BluRay cover

anyone know if you can order JUST this piece from hp?

this way i just leave it on, and have both the HD caddy and optical drive each with their own cover?

Did you see THIS post?

And if you break it you can glue it or you can order one. :D
