Apple Announces M1 Ultra CPU, Mac Studio and Studio Display

I pulled the trigger and ordered a Ultra. Upgraded to 2TB and got Apple Care+.

Expensive but I like the feature set and wanted to treat myself to something nice.
It has enough cores, memory and HD space for a few Virtual Machine sessions.
Will also using it with Davinci Resolve and who knows I might get Final Cut Pro?

Not shipping until beginning of April so looks like people are snapping these up quickly.

I'll keep my hack for a while but it will be cool not having to tinker with it so much.

Anyone else get one or any other M1, Pro, Max computers?

After buying the 14" M1 Max MacBook Pro late last year and setting it on a vertical dock, the only thing missing was an amazing Apple-designed monitor to go with it.

That problem has now been solved! Delivery expected March 18. :)
  • 5K pixels
  • Solid aluminum build (finally)
  • Thunderbolt with 96W power delivery, perfect for 14" MacBook Pro
  • Three USB-C ports
  • 12 megapixel ultra wide angle camera with Center Stage
  • 6 speakers (Apple's built-in speakers are unmatched in the industry)
  • 600 nits brightness
  • True Tone

John Ternus said the only machine left for Apple Silicon is the Mac Pro. That means the Studio has retired the iMac Pro for good ? It could also simply mean that the iMac in the 24" version already got Apple Silicon.

I don't think that, the Mac Studio 1999usd has the M1 Max GPU, and that GPU performs like a RX 6600, I have one and I can tell that. The RX 6600 cost like 500/600usd. The RX 6900 XT cost 1500usd and the M1 Ultra suppose to have that level of performance. I think you are a bit confuse... In other hand, with a lot less than 1999usd you can build a hackintosh that performs the same or better. The 10 core Apple Silicon perform lower than a Core i5 12600K, as I said I have a M1 Max and 2 Hackintoshes and I did a lot of testing. In other hand the Max Out M1 Ultra is interesting, but a Hackintosh that performs almost the same (Core i9 12900K, RX 6900 XT 16GB, 128GB RAM DDR5, NVME 2TB Pcie Gen 4) still will have a much lower price for sure!!!
Could you please be more specific about your statements? How you tested 12600K vs M1 Pro/Max? How can you tell a 6900XT + 12900K is equally powerful as a M1 Ultra? I’m asking since I currently rock a 9980XE + 6800XT + 64GB DDR4 3600Mhz + Intel Optane 480GB storage (Blazing Fast 3d X-Point memory) —> I’m tempted by an M1 Max Studio genuine Mac, but (even if a bit dated) my hackintosh is still fast! Basically I’m dubious since I can sell my machine for the Mac Studio at roughly the same price and get a real Mac (loosing ability to run Win 11 which is a nice to have). Anyone feel free to gimme advices!

So a Mac Studio w/M1 Max, 1TB SSD and 64GB RAM would be $2600.

What's a rough guess of what a current Hackintosh with similar specs would cost…ignoring ports, bluetooth, and wifi?
An equivalent system with 10-Core CPU, comparable GPU, 64GB of RAM, 1TB of Gen4 storage, thunderbolt, 10G LAN, etc? About the same, half of it would be the GPU, AND that before WiFi/BT.

If the dual M1 Max is called the Ultra, what will Apple call the chip in the Apple Si Mac Pro ???

I'd bet on the M1 Xtreme for the name. I'll check back here in 2023 to see if I'm right. How will they connect two Ultras together ? That may be why it will take so long. Or maybe by then it will be the M2 Xtreme.

I ordered my ULTRA!!

I've been using hackintoshes as my primary work desktop for 10 years! All thanks to this wonderful community!
Long story short I've been in need for a more powerful desktop as I've got more into animation and have been tinkering with 3D modeling/animation. I've also got tired of tinkering with my machine and never had time to get certain ports/accessories to work as intended.

This cost me a lot of money, but I'm excited and hope I don't regret not upgrading the SSD. I did upgrade GPU and maxed out memory to 128.

Attached are my specs and my total paid price paid :O
(Education discount saved me around $500)

That total price is about $400 less than what the base model 2019 Mac Pro sold for at launch. Good thing you waited a few more years. People with expensive 2019 Mac Pros can't even sell them these days. To get close to the equivalent specs in the 2019 MP it would cost well over $13,000. It would probably be a lot slower too. Thanks for being on board here for the last ten years.
