Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Hi CaseySJ,

That's an interesting question and I need to see if there is an actual pattern somewhere.

The wake-from-sleep crash sometimes also happens where no external drives or other factors are involved - just seemingly out of a clear blue sky.

As for the drives, all three are older HDDs in USB enclosures, all in NTFS formats.

What I cannot understand is why every time there is a crash I cannot see anything on the monitor - in fact it does not wake up at all.

- Any ideas what I could try to resolve?
If a pattern cannot be found, my next recommendation is to boot from the bootable backup disk if that backup was made several days or weeks ago. See if the wake-from-sleep crash still occurs.

If the bootable backup disk also leads to wake-from-sleep crashes, then we should install a fresh copy of macOS on a spare 128GB (or other cheap) SATA SSD mounted either (a) internally or (b) in a USB 3 enclosure. No third-party applications should be installed. Instead, check if sleep/wake crashes still occur. If no crashes occur, then install one of your applications at a time and test sleep/wake again.

- You did not respond to my question whether I should upgrade my BIOS (3a) to the newest one- could this fix it?
Yes it's advisable to install BIOS F5 (but not F7c because I don't trust any Gigabyte BIOS at this time that contains resizable Base Address Register support). I'm not sure that it will affect sleep/wake reliability, but it's still worth doing.

What a bad day for me...
Both of my Ethernet ports died  (the I225-V firmware tool erased my I219-V)
I've managed to get a return to Amazon for a refund 6 months later (better than Gigabyte RMA nightmare).
But...there's no more Z490 Vision D anywhere at this time.
So I'm thinking to go for @CaseySJ B550 Vision D thread.

Switch for a Ryzen build and replace the i5-10400, or go for Z490 Vision G (but no TB3)...I need help to choose

EDIT: i have miraculously found the last VISION D of the country ;) so i hope i won't fry the ethernet this time.

Hello all,

Short-term lurker and first post...

I've been reading this thread since about page 100, and finally got hold of all the components to build myself a Hackintosh. For some reason, there are almost no AMD graphics cards to be had anywhere, for any price - even old things like the RX5X0 family.

After a few misadventures caused by a rubbish quality Verbatim USB stick, I have a fully functional Hackintosh that is dual-boot Catalina / Windows 10, with the Intel WiFi & BlueTooth drivers installed and working fine.

Thank you, Casey for a well written guide. There were a few spots that stumped me when reality didn't quite match your notes, but I got there.

I confess it was a bit daunting and a learning curve to get my head around everything.

Yes, step 13 was followed and tested successfully. :) I am now in the process of re-installing all my programs and copying my data from my old iMac.

Specs:

Mobo: Vision D (BIOS F6)
CPU: i5-10600
Cooler: ShadowRock Slim
Case: BeQuiet PureBase 500 (no LEDs or window)
P/S: BeQuiet Straight Power 11 (650W)
RAM: G.Skill RipJaws V (2*16G)
Video: 4GB Sapphire Pulse RX5500XT
Disk 0: Adata SX8200 Pro - 256G - Windows
Disk 1: Adata SX8200 Pro - 1TB - macOS

Hi @CaseySJ,

Interestingly, I just had a wake up crash on my Windows system (dual boot) with the same external USB drives. This leads me to further believe that something has to do with the board and a BIOS update may be worth of trying.

Do you happen to have any recommendations on how to flash the BIOS:
- do I do the Q flash
- or should I update with Windows

Anything else I should keep in mind to make sure that I do not destroy the system?

Thanks!!!

Sorry to hear that and not sure how something like that can happen...

Anyway, please note that AMD Ryzen systems have some important limitations, including B550 Vision D:
  • Thunderbolt daisy chaining may not work reliably or it may not work at all. This is device-specific. Not all devices will exhibit problems, but we know that UAD Apollo with a daisy-chained Satellite will not work.
    • A single UAD Apollo connected directly should work, but some folks have reported audio stuttering.
  • Virtualization software will not work (Parallels, VMWare, Docker, etc.).
  • Some Adobe applications may not work directly, but there are specific patches available (described in the B550 Vision D thread) that may help.

+100!

Good to hear you're reinstalling apps rather than migrating them. This should lead to a more stable and less cluttered system.

Great component choices, especially those ADATA NVMe SSDs instead of Samsung EVOs (which run hotter on Macs).

That changes the equation...

Simply download BIOS F5 from the Gigabyte website and copy it to a FAT32 USB flash disk. Enter BIOS Setup and update the BIOS from there. Some questions:
  • What is the make/model of your mouse?
  • What is the make/model of your keyboard?
Something to try on the Mac side:
  • Download the utility Jettison. It has a free trial period.
  • Configure it to eject USB drives before sleep, and to reconnect them after sleep.
  • Check if sleep/wake is better or unchanged.

Do you mean Z490 Vision G (not P)?
Sorry, you're right. Z490 Vision G is what I meant.

Can the Vision G be used instead?

Yes it can. Please see Post #1:

Starting with OpenCore 0.6.6 I'll include an EFI for Z490 Vision G.

both are Logitech MX with a USB unifying controller (not bluetooth)

Will try, thank you for the tip!
