Gigabyte Z490 Vision D (Thunderbolt 3) + i5-10400 + AMD RX 580

Morning, I've encountered a couple more issues. I've just tried to install Firefox and I also get a crash on startup. I've attached my config as I think I may have made some kind of newbie mistake.

Bit more information:

I have a few websites that won't load in safari, for example andertons.co.uk, apple.com, but google is fine.

Machine is 10700k, Vision D, no DGPU. Connected to screen using usb c to hdmi. Everything seems stable, no KPs but just a few teething issues.

"Native Access Crash"
"Firefox crash"

Issues not present on dGPU.

@CaseySJ I have 2 issues that maybe you can help me.
As per my signature I have the same motherboard than you, different processor and video card. Also to note is that I have an NZXT internal USB2.1 usb so that I can connect the USB 2.00/USB3.1 front panel as well as the NZXT Kraken USB header and the USB cable for the bluetooth/wifi combo genuine Apple card. Without this NZXT internal hub, I am short of USB 2.0 headers.
Also my SDD config is 1 x WD Black SN70 1TB NVMe SSD boot drive, 1 x Samsung Evo Plus 1TB NVMe SSD which current hold a back up of the WD (EFI on the Samsung is empty), and 1 X WD 1T classic HDD which hold a previous 10.15.4 backup (EFI empty as well).
Note that I am on 10.15.6.
I have followed your guide and used your SSDTs, kexts, config plist and everything is sort of running smoothly except the following:
- startup disk: somehow I can't have opencore booting the right SSD. I am not sure if it opencore or MacOs. I can change the startup disk in MacOS preferences (I unlock the panel, set the startup disk, lock the panel). I have double checked that if I reopen the preferences and check the startup disk, the right one is selected and it is. However when I restart, opencore keeps pointing at the wrong drive. In opencore picker, the drives are listed alphabetically and the first one on the list is the classing HDD, followed by WD Black NVMe (which is the one to boot from). I can't find anything on the net. Maybe because opencore is too new and there is no enough information. And if I select the WD and boot the system, once it is up and running and I go to check the startup disk, it is empty. Nothing is selecting.
Let's start by reseting NVRAM at the OpenCore Picker. Simply press spacebar to reveal additional options. NVRAM reset should be one of entries on the far right. When system reboots, boot into Catalina and try setting Startup Disk again. Reboot and see if the chosen startup disk is indeed selected.

If the problem persists, please open config.plist in OpenCore Configurator and post screenshots of the default main page of each of the following:
  • Booter
  • Kernel
  • NVRAM
- Sleep/Wake: no matter what darwake mode I use, the system goes to sleep and wake up immediately. I have run the following command in a terminal:

pmset -g log | grep -e "Sleep.*due to" -e "Wake.*due to"

and got the following:
...
You can see that the system tries to go to sleep then wakes up again. I have the right settings in the power preferences (disabled power nap, wake on lan), proximitywake set to 0 as well as hibernate set to 0 as well. Again, I can't find any information on the net (at least for my config and opencore). I have tried your config.plist and another config.plist and the same issue. Note that the problem exists with or without the NZXT hub just in case we thought that it could be the pb. Also note that I have a USB webcam, USB card reader and a usb hub (via my monitor) connected to the motherboard via the rear panel.
Some questions / requests:
  • What devices are connected to the internal USB 2.0 headers?
  • What devices are connected to USB ports on the front panel of the PC case?
  • Please run Activity Monitor, sort the list by % CPU, wait about 10 seconds for the list to settle, then post a screenshot. Feel free to mask out any private information. We're looking to see if any apps or services are consuming high CPU time.
- last issue: Upon restarting the system, I always have the "Reopen windows when logged back in" box ticked. Upon restarting the windows are all over the place. There are not back where they were before restarting. Some ar ein the middle of the screen, some are half outside the screen, etc. I would not care much if sleep was working but because sleep is not working and I have to shutdown and restart, this is becoming an issue. There will be times where some of the windows will retain the position on the screen while other times it will be completely out. On my previous Hack (Z97X), I had an Nvidia GTx660 and that issue was not there. As soon as I switched the card for teh 5600XT, this is where the issue started to appear.

Apologies for the long post. I hope someone can help because I have spent the past 2 weeks to fix those issues and no success.
Thanks

Ps: thanks for your very detailed guide
  • Was macOS installed from scratch? That is, a previous SSD with macOS already installed was or was not transplanted into this system?
  • Was Migration Assistant used?
  • Did this problem occur when macOS was initially installed, or did it start (a) days or (b) weeks later?

When we use Platform ID 0x3E9B0007 to allow iGPU to drive display monitors, some applications crash on load. We don't have a comprehensive list of these apps, but (a) iMovie, (b) Final Cut Pro, (c) ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac, and possibly other audio, video, and photo apps will crash on load. Unfortunately we don't have a solution for that other than to switch to a discrete AMD GPU and set Platform ID to headless mode (0x3E980003).

Here's "andertons.co.uk" on Safari on my Vision D with discrete AMD GPU (MSI RX 580):

Ah thats unfortunate. Out of interest, with a DGPU is it possible to drive the monitors through a thunderbolt dock using the dp in? I guess I’ll have to move the dgpu order forward.

Yes that should be possible, but I would encourage you to search this site for "Thunderbolt monitor" ahead of time. We've seen various issues with sleep, wake, monitor not turning on during BIOS and OpenCore, etc. The safest bet is to use DisplayPort or HDMI monitors.

I think I misunderstood the question. If you're using an HDMI monitor connected to a Thunderbolt dock via HDMI port, it may be possible to drive it if DP-In is connected to the AMD discrete GPU. I have not tested this myself, however.

The monitors are DisplayPort, but they are plugged in via a OWC Thunderbolt hub. Worse case is I’ll run some more cables. The dGPU will arrive tomorrow so I’ll report back then.

I'll report back when the DGPU and thunderbolt cable arrive. All my server side stuff is running beautifully though.

@CaseySJ I took a closer look at my sleep problem, because it is quite obvious that several people have problems with the fenvi card. It turns out, my system successfully goes into sleep mode without the fenvi card. It only took almost 12 minutes without additional settings in the hackintool...

I'm finally one step closer. Thanks for all the tips.

@CaseySJ Did I understand correctly that you use the exact same Fenvi card without any problems (https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07WGS46PY/?tag=tonymacx8603-21), which caused sleep problems for me and several other users here? I am thinking about buying a second one as a test...

Unfortunately the YOUBO BCM94360CD used by @blob32 and @dranose is not available here (Germany). This one would be available: BCM94360CD MQUPIN AC1750 5G WiFi (https://www.amazon.de/dp/BCM94360CD/?tag=tonymacx8603-21).

Does anyone have any recommendations for problem-free alternatives? The Fenvi FV-HB1200 is currently not available either.
