Kind of a clickbait title, but it is true...
Long story short: wanted to upgrade my machine. Bought an RX580 as per apple and tonymacx86 recommendation to have an OOB card, but it is not working in Mojave for me. At the graphics init stage, after the apple logo boot screen, the screen goes black. Previously tried an XFX RX570 with the same behaviour.
When running on my previous 10.12.6 install, the card works perfectly fine, and is detected as an R9 xxx card with metal support.
Soft+Hardware+BIOS settings:
- i7 2600 with HD2000
- Sapphire pulse RX580 8GB
- Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 updated to latest bios (U1n(UEFI BIOS))
- Unibeast 9.2.0
- Clover 4910 (for direct update)
- Mojave OS version 10.14.4
- Tried multiple BIOS settings, but mostly tried the ones from the guide for my mobo linked below:
• Save & Exit > Load Optimized Defaults
• M.I.T. > Advanced Frequency Settings > Advanced CPU Core Features > CPU EIST Function = Disabled
• M.I.T. > Advanced Memory Settings > Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P.) = Profile1*
*Set to Disabled if your RAM modules do not support Intel XMP
• BIOS Features > Intel Virtualization Technology = Enabled
• BIOS Features > OS Type = Other OS
• BIOS Features > Boot Mode Selection = UEFI Only
• Peripherals > SATA Mode Selection = AHCI
Full EFI folder with config.plist and kexts used included for the unibeast stick. If I need to upload more things, please let me know.
What is strange however, is when I change the primary GPU to the integrated one on my i7 2600(=HD2000), a display connected to any of the DP/HDMI ports on the 580 shows an empty desktop screen with working mouse cursor after boot. The main desktop is not showing, like it has a ghost connected display somehow.
Things I tried:
- Tried both direct update and clean install with unibeast procedures
- Tried a unibeast High Sierra drive, same behaviour
- Tried both Legacy and UEFI booting, same behaviour
- Tried disabled and enabled IGPU
- Updated the Bios and followed this guide for my specific motherboard: https://mcdojf.wixsite.com/z68x
- Tried all connectors on my videocard
- SMBIOS 13,2 and 14,2
- With and without LILU+WEG(but I think it should not be needed?)
As this video card should be fully supported and I had tried another card with the exact same result, it must be due to another factor. I suspect it has to be my CPU, since others have gotten the mobo working fine, see guide. I could try to find a 3770k to upgrade to, but only if that will solve my issues, as it is still quite expensive an upgrade in my area.
I also read about a CSM bios option related to a similar issue, but I don't have this option in my bios.
Any help would be appreciated.
