Highly doubt that since the 9980XE (18 core) is still $2000 like the 7980XE

Intel is basically taking a $10,000 28 core Xeon and rebadging it as a HEDT CPU.

What they will probably do is make the IHS soldered rather than paste.

They got sidelined by AMD's surprise hit with Threadripper and Ryzen architecture and their 10nm process is not even in the works properly until early-late 2019. They are getting a new CEO too.

Also if you read that ASUS article, it states that there are only 2 companies making motherboards for the 28core socket. It seems to be a small run.

As they say: “For only a selected few” and I want to be one of them ;)

Haha you would pay $10k for a cpu? I mean I make very good money but it’s bad value.

Oh well.

I wouldn’t mind the newer 18core which has a faster base clock and is soldered.

Certainly I would never pay 10K for a CPU. Forgot that if there would be just a few, the price would be totally scaring

No idea what would be the difference between a delidded or soldered CPU in terms of overclocking. Do you really think it would be worth to change from the old to the the new 18 core?

You are raising the question I had in mind:
Is the base clock on the 9980XE higher because they improved thermals with soldering the IHS?
If that is the case I doubt a change from deluded 7980XE would give a reasonable improvement.

All the best
Frank

I guess twice a yes.

These 99 series are in a different league with 68 PCIE Lanes.

True.. but to take profit of the 68 PCIE lanes one also needs new mainboards? Does e.g. the Prime X299 Deluxe II support 68 PCIe lanes?

I don’t think it’s a big jump for you since it seems you’re overclocking anyway. If you’re happy with the temps without delidding then you’re good.

I have a 10 core so a 18core with 3.0ghz base clock would be a big jump for me so the new solder will definitely help on my end and I don’t want to overclock since it never is stable for me.

It’s interesting that Intel didn’t even change the price even with AMD giving a better value with Threadripper. Intel doesn’t seem to care.

Also surprisingly they didn’t release a promised 22core for the x299 series which is sad. I really wanted that one and don’t want to change motherboards.

If I wasn’t Hackintoshing I would jump on the AMD 2990WX for $1799 right now. 32c/64t is insane.

Most applications in the industry are more geared towards Intel like Adobe apps so it’s going to be interesting what happens next.
