Install one method, restart, reply with new files.

So, making some progress. It took me a few days to work through the different steps - and I managed to mess up my config.plist a few times which forced me to reinstall the OS at least once, but I've managed to get basic audio working finally. Stereo sound is working, but surround doesn't seem to be (yet). Also my microphone doesn't seem to be working either. I'll probably post some questions in some of your other threads with those details.

Just in case anyone else is interested, here's the final set of steps I took to get to where I am now:
1. clean OS install with basic Clover boot loader, then followed the AppleHDA guide here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/applehda-realtek-audio-guide.234732/#post-1606764
2. As per step 'I' I moved on to the "cloverALC - Before You Install" guide found in comment #1 here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/before-you-install-audio-desktop-realtek-applehda-guide.219810/
3. I followed all steps up to step 5 "Unsupported Audio" (x299 has CAVS audio instead of HDEF) then I jumped back to step IX "Unsupported / Not Working AppleHDA Realtek Audio" as described: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/applehda-realtek-audio-guide.234732/#post-1606764
4. Following the section "x299" under section IX, I performed the first couple of steps to "Rename dsdt/CAVS to HDEF".
5. After a reboot, I resumed the rest of the steps described in the "Before You Install" page mentioned in step 2. Everything verified successfully.
6. Continued on to section "II" back on the "AppleHDA Realtek Audio" page that I started with in step 1. I followed the details under sub-step #1 "cloverALC" (tried the other 2 sub-steps in that section but neither worked)
7. rebooted again - audio device was successfully detected (with the couple of caveats I mentioned above)

Thanks for the help. Will probably need more tips to get surround sound and my mic working.
