[solved] HP Elitebook 840 G2 won't sleep or shutdown

I've successfully avoided Windows for 25 years or so now. I'd install it, but I'm not sure how to with this setup and already partitioned drive.

I've begun installing a VM (found a utility that's supposed to be able to change the BIOS from within Windows), but I don't think that's going to help (it'll go after the VMware BIOS).

VM probably not helpful.
Important dual boot info is in the guide:
https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/guide-booting-the-os-x-installer-on-laptops-with-clover.148093/

Attempting that now. I've created a bootable USB installer for Windows 7 Ultimate. I've selected the USB stick, installer's started. I repartitioned my main drive, creating a 20 GB HFS+J partition, per the guide. I've selected that partition in the installer, and it says it can't install because of the format. Presumably I allow the installer to reformat the partition? Can't tell from the guide (not sure if the warning about partition format applies at this point or only when creating the partition).

Tried deleting and recreating the partition with the Windows installer. Windows still wouldn't install. Creating a Windows 10 USB installer now.

...and same result. Installer complains that the disk is formatted GPT and can't install to it.

Must delete the partition.
Keep in mind Win7 requires special care to create a UEFI installer (google it).

Must boot the Windows installer in UEFI mode.

Looks like that was a wild goose chase. Got Windows 10 installed (no mean feat in itself: had to remove the M2 drive for the installer to work properly) and disabled Fast Boot in Windows, but this unfortunately had no effect on Fast Boot in the BIOS. Neither the Googlebox nor my 50 attempts at this and that have gotten the BIOS option enabled.

I presume your confidence is relatively high that that's relevant here?

I've noticed if I let the machine sit at the macOS login prompt, or if the screen blanks while logged in after sitting for a while (screen save to powered off screen), the display lights back up. Restart also works fine. The only issues are sleep (selecting from the Apple menu or closing the lid) and shutdown from the Apple menu, both resulting in the fan kicking on after 10-20 seconds.

The embarrassingly simple solution to disabling Fast Boot in the BIOS was resetting the BIOS to factory defaults.

Good news: Fast Boot is disabled. Bad news: sleep and shutdown still don't work. Updated debug files attached.
