I have a couple of Hard Drives; a 5.25 inch Seagate 4 TB with external power supply as well as a 2TB Toshiba 2.5 inch and a WD 2TB 2.5 inch without external power; none of them work. I bought a powered USB 3 4-Port Hub today because i assumed it could be a current issue; but even the hub without a connected device seems to "black out" my monitor.
usb 3 connected at start:
the machine starts… i see the leds flicker at the front panel… but nothing on my monitor…. but i can access it via ethernet.
usb 3 connected to the running machine (hot plug):
monitor goes black instantly, but the machine is still accessible via network
usb 3 disconnected at start:
normal behavior; all seems well.
strange.
Shut down the computer and unplug the 4TB drive. Remove the 4-port hub, and connect the 2TB drive. See if the computer will boot up normally. I have a 1TB WD drive for Time Machine back ups and a 8TB WD Easystore. If I try to boot the computer with the 8TB drive hooked up it will stop at the HP splash screen. This is a problem with the BIOS. From the info I've been able to find a powered USB hub will do it too. Right now there is nothing you can do to fix it. Its not a problem with the computer or OS itself. This problem happens with Windows too. For now I just have to unplug the 8TB usb, let the computer boot and then plug it in while its running.
