Hey all,
I'm leaving this here to keep a quick note that I will update with more detail in the near future. Meanwhile, RehabMan, a million gracious thank you's my friend. This is my second build off one of your more experimental builds and I'm so thankful for your knowledge and step by step instructions. My first build was a brand new RIVE Black Edition a few years back (the mobo was barely a month old) and your guide got me up and running on my most stable mac I've ever owned
.
For those interested in Thunderbolt3, here are a few quick notes I will be revisiting...
I bought
Thunder3 Quad X, it
did not work out the gate.
- I had to load some new kext files to my EFI
- more on that later, would love your opinion on it eventually Rehab
Also own an
UltraStudio HD mini, it
did work out the gate
(Note, the only way to power the UltraStudio is via Thunderbolt3)
Now for the quick note, more detail to come soon...
- The Thunder3 Quad X has a 'loop-thru' thunderbolt 3 port, also has a DP port
- I want to run both thunderbolt devices simultaneously
- First boot with both plugged in (Thunder3QX > Ultrastudio), the UltraStudio was not turning on and not being recognized
- Knowing it would not be discoverable, I disconnected and re-connected
- Powers on, yay.
- Get warning from HighSierra (only happened once, cant recreate this) something along the lines of "This computer does not support thunderbolt, yadayada." I didnt take note of the exact warning.
- Restart computer, NOT power down.
- Both devices stay powered on reboot, nice.
- Both devices are powered on in OS for first time, OS recognizes both for first time, but the oddities begin...
- Can see the root folder structure on the Thunder3QX RAID, but cannot go past the root. Default configurator for Ultrastudio sees the box, but DaVinci Resolve (software that utilizes the box's capabilities) gives me a warning that it cant see/use the box.
- Now I try a bunch of different configurations and boot cycles. Didn't take great notes, in short had DP cable plugged in at some point, thought it was the issue. Was not the issue. DP works fine, does not appear to have an affect. Somethings I do remember:
- During testing, Thunder3QX is not discoverable for the first time when the only device plugged in.
- When Thunder3 does work correctly on boot, hot plugging the UltraStudio now creates the "Root Folder" problem, where I can see files
- Cannot get the warning "This computer does not support thunderbolt" to reappear
- Do a hard shutdown, both devices are powered off. Start machine, BOTH devices get power for the first time from cold-boot.
- BOTH devices are now working from this cold-boot. I don't have time to keep testing at this moment, but wanted to get this down before I forgot the details. I'll also add a description to how I got the Thunder3QX up and running, as I'm quite sure that has something to do with it.
That's it for now. Best of luck with the builds out there! Thanks again RehabMan, feel free to ask any questions/clarifications and I'll try and get to them after cleaning up this mess of a post.
