Skylake Starter Guide

Here is what hardware I have and what works for me so far

Gigabyte GA-Z170X-UD5 TH
Intel 6700K
Asus GTX 980 Strix
Samsung SM951 (AHIC Version, not nvme. This is important)
Startech ST1000SPEX2 PCIe Ethernet
USB Dac/Amp for audio but onboard works (See post 1 & 2 of this thread http://www.tonymacx86.com/desktop-compatibility/176407-testing-thread-skylake-platform-os-x.html)
Mac OS 10.11.1 (10.11.2 breaks the USB fix unfortunately)

Pre-setup steps
Update your bios to the latest version f4b at time of writing this
Disable the serial port
Disable IOAPIC 24-119
Set OS to Win 8 WHQL
Disable CSM

Lets get started!

1. Make a Unibeast USB using the clover option and default settings and then overwrite the CLOVER folder on the USB EFI partition with the one linked below.
2. Install Mac OS
3. Reboot.
4. Use Multibeast 8.0.1 with Clover and default settings, then like with the USB, overwrite the CLOVER folder on your HD's EFI partition with the one linked below.
5. Reboot from the HD and remove the USB used to install.

These steps are if you have a new Nvidia based GPU If you aren't using an newer Nvidia based GPU, just remove that flag entirely for both the USB config and the final config.

---
6. Install Nvidia web drivers and but don't reboot yet.
6.5 Copy AppleGraphicsControl.kext to the desktop and follow this post to patch it http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/...-after-nvidia-346-01-02f01-2.html#post1018395
7. Open the config file on the EFI partition and change nv_disable=1 to nada_drv=1.
---

8. Reboot and you should be good to go.

Extra info:

Here's what's included in my CLOVER folder and what is optional

- ACPI/patched SSDT-USB.aml (this is for the USB patch for the UD5 TH board only)
- Kexts/ 10.10 & 10.11
- RealtekRTL8111.kext (for the startech network card, remove this if you don't have a realtek based pci-e card)
- USBInjectAll.kext (needed for the USB 3 fix)
- FakeSMC (do not remove)
- Mac Pro 6,1 SMBIOS
Does the USB3.1 and thunderbolt ports work?
Thanks

Skylake Starter Guide

I am sorry if it sounds like I am beating a dead horse here or if there is a reason no one has responded but is there any reason why the gaming 7 motherboard wouldnt work instead of the ud5 th? They both seem to have the same controller for the thunderbolt port so when thunderbolt is finally figured out for the ud5 it should work the same. Both are gigabyte that historically has had great success...

Has anyone had good luck? Objectively it seems to be a better motherboard and the lower price certainly helps too.

My goal is to run both windows 7 and OS X.

This guide worked very well for me in my Asus Z170-P and skylake i5. Thanks!

However, the graphical glitches and lack of Ethernet make the system very difficult to use.

Is there any expected improvements on the HD 530 Integrated Graphics support?
I just want to know on what is a better support depending on? What is exactly the problem? Better skylake support of Mac OS?

Skylake Starter Guide

The problem is that Apple does not have good video drivers for the HD 530 in El Capitan.

Probably you should get an Nvidia card. You can get a GT 730 for $50 or less, or even a GT 610 if you don't want 4K support. (And a cheap 8111 PCIe Ethernet card, if that's also a dealbreaker for you.)

The Broadwell integrated graphics were in a very similar position with Yosemite, and then El Capitan came out and completely fixed them. So the worst case is probably next fall with 10.12 it'll all get better. Best case is that Apple releases a Skylake Mac with integrated graphics or GPU switching, and drops in revised drivers tomorrow. But so far as I know the 10.11.2 betas haven't improved things, so I'm not really expecting progress soon.

In the mean time, I don't think it's a coincidence that the new iMacs with integrated graphics are using Broadwell chips, and the Skylake ones have a GPU.

Hm. I didn't realize until now that Apple uses an external video card for its Skylake offerings. That explains why the builtin GPU doesn't work properly, I guess.

But USB3.1? Thunderbolt? Ethernet? Apple uses non-standard chips/drivers for these? How about nvme? Why doesn't the Samsung M2.nvme stuff work? Apple uses nvme in some of its computers.

I'm unpleasantly surprised that my NEC USB3 ports suddenly stopped working in 10.11...

I'm planning a third party videocard anyway because of FCP, but I need/want M2.nvme/TB3/USB3.1 to work properly.

Otherwise I might as well stick with my current rig.

After doing a lot of research, I am just saying this for future people that were in my predicament. It appears that the audio device (creative sound core) in charge of audio for the z170x gaming 7 doesn't work with osx. So it would appear that the gaming 5 or ud5 th might be the best options so far.

i7-6700K, ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming w/Nvidia GTX 970 & 32 GB memory.

I followed this guide exactly and with success. No issues came up really. Follow the guide *exactly*.

Here are some helper files to get you started on the "real" usb fix mentioned in the first post.

Source and AML for SSDT-USB patch

Removed aml and dsl. See post #95 for full aml and dal for all USB ports on the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming.
