ASUS ThunderboltEX II PCIe Expansion Card - Testing Thread

I have an Asus Sabertooth z97 mark 1 mobo and Thunderboltex ii card and wanted to know if I need to leave the Windows hard drive connected after installing the drivers and having it recognized? Can it be disconnected afterwards and removed?

After the inital 'wakeup' of the Thunderbolt 2 chip, you don't ever have to use or attach the Windows drive again.

Any tips on getting the card to wake up? I installed the Windows driver and now I see the thunderbolt menu in the bios. I'm using an Apple thunderbolt to FireWire adapter on a Newer Tech Voyager Q HD dock and can't get it to show up. Should the Thunderboltex ii card show in the device manager somewhere?

Sorry for the upside down photos.

I do not see the the Thunderbolt card in my device manager, so maybe the card isn't being seen by Windows? I'm using Windows 7 professional btw.

Is anyone able to control the brightness of a Thunderbolt Display in either Hackintosh or Windows?

The only way I can change the brightness is to disconnect thunderbolt, connect the Thunderbolt display to my Macbook Pro & change the brightness in there. Then I have to reboot my Hackintosh and the brightness seems to get applied.. Seems a bit devious.., does anybody know a better way to do this?

Another question.. I just reinstalled El Capitan on hackintosh and I remember there was a way to fasten up the boot up of Hackintosh by bypassing some of the Thunderbolt drivers (that wasn't necessary) with some boot flags or extra kexts..

Does anybody know how to do this?

I got it working! On the Asus Sabertooth Z97 mark 1 mobo bios I had to change the PCi-EX16_3 slot from x1 mode (default) to x4 mode for high performance. It's not in the PCH menu of the bios but rather the ONboard Devices Configuration menu. Once I changed it and booted into Windows voilà, it shows up in the Thunderbolt software. I then disconnected the drive and booted in OSX Yosemite and it shows up in About This Mac/hardware/thunderbolt.

Hey guys,

I can now confirm a couple of things, for I succeeded in building my favored built:

Z97 Gryphon
GTX 970
Asus TB2 -Dual- Card
running El Capitan with Clover
the natively supported Broadcom BT/Wifi Chip

Essentially: Everything works. I can even couple an Apple Thunderbolt Display to the discrete Graphics with full GPU Output - nice!

Had to first activate the thunderbolt card with drivers on Windows and since then it runs like a charm. On windows, it's even hot-pluggable. For OS X, any TB device needs to be connected on startup, though.

Yes, the Asus TB DUAL Card is working with the Z97 Gryphon Mainboard, even though it says otherwise on the net and in the manual.

As for the setup with the discrete graphics: I connected the display port from Thunderbolt Card -> GTX 970 and Thunderbolt Card -> Thunderbolt Display, no adjustment needed. Sound's working, but so far I did not manage to achieve any of the other Thunderbolt Displays functionality. If anyone is aware of a workaround for this, it'd be much appreciated.

EDIT: Oddly, the Thunderbolt Display seems to -fully- work sometimes. I'd tried to figure out how and when and to see if it's reproducible - it is. If I first start into Windows 10 if an additional display (in my case attached via HDMI) and then proceed to reboot into OS X, every ATD functionality is working as intended and I don't need to keep the additional display on or plugged in. Of course, rebooting or shutting down the system creates to need to redo this procedure, so it is somewhat annoying if regular switching is in use. I'll add any further observation and/or solution as soon as they occur.
