Why I decided to build this system
I have a MacPro 1,1 (2006). A good workhorse, but felt like it needed a replacement. It had 4 internal disks (2 for RAID 1, one for TimeMachine and one for bootcamp). Going for a iMac / laptop was not an option. I waited to see what Apple would come up with for the "next gen" Mac Pro. As beautiful as the machine is, I did not see an easy migration path that did not require me to buy overpriced disk enclosures on top of the machine itself that proved how enslaved I was to this system. I had this rig so I could upgrade / scale / migrate easily. Apple was no longer playing along. So here I am.
OS(s)
This build is setup to multi-boot with Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10.1) / Windows Vista (it's ok to laugh)
Everyone should know
- a Hackintosh will not play your movies with DRM: http://www.tonymacx86.com/mac-softw...deo-not-playing-sd-hd-drm-content-solved.html
- a Hackintosh will not give you hot swap on your Thunderbolt ports:http://www.tonymacx86.com/dsdt/89594-could-dsdt-fix-thunderbolt-problem.html
Installation Notes
- I did a ton of reading ahead of time. Installation was that much easier afterwards.
- This case has a FireWire port in the front, while the motherboard has no connector for it.
- This case has one SS USB 3.0 in the front, simply a pass-trough wire. I don't have a connector for the motherboard.
- I read the Yosemite install guide: http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-...-x-yosemite-any-supported-intel-based-pc.html
- All OSes are on the SSD drive. Instructions from RehabMan's blog post were crucial. (See his profile for the blog URL). I used "Parted Magic" to carry it out.
- See also in Forum->Installation->Other Operating Systems->Multi Booting. You will find there a sticky post that is a guide. This guide points to an external site with instructions to put users data on a different drive than you OS drive.
- I used UniBeast 5.0.2 and MultiBeast 7.1.1
- I used Mac Pro 3.1 as a system definition to avoid black screen I got after using 6.1. Also removed 'GenericUSBXCI.kext'. (both steps, as per post #5 here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/yosemite-...z97x-ud7-th-yosemite-installation-freeze.html)
- The boot time remains long because of thunderbolt until you apply this fix: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/128748-fix-slow-boot-thunderbolt-2-0-motherboards.html
- Never had to boot with -x or -v (or any other boot flags)
- I don't have any thunderbolt peripherals so I can't really test much about those right now.
- Was under the impression I had no sound, until I plugged my wire in the black jack (instead of the green one)
- I don't use iMessage. Not on this machine or any other machine. Period.
- I did not try handoff.
Wishlist
*I don't know if any of this is plug-n-play or simply could not work with this build, but I would be willing to try*
- USB 3.0 connector that will let me plug the front port to the motherboard
- Wifi Card with bluetooth / handoff capable: http://www.osxwifi.com/apple-broadc...-bluetooth-4-0-with-adapter-for-pc-hackintosh
Almost perfect...
Still working to iron out a few kinks:
- Valid DVD could not be found -70012 / Eject button not working. (I did not try the kext fix yet as I was under the impression Yosemite needed signed kexts for this)
- When booting, the motherboard gives me a led error code '51' (memory initialization error occurs). If at the chimera screen I press a key to get the list of available boot drives, but select the same drive: no more error (led code = '01') (that's without any boot flags). If I boot with windows, led code = '01'. If I get led code = '51' under OS X and do 'reboot' instead of 'shutdown' the next boot led code is '01'. ?!?!? I doubt I'm reading those backwards (10 and 15 instead of 01 and 51, because otherwise I would have to read the other ones of the boot sequence backwards too: 'AE' does not read both ways...)
