It happens to me too that sometimes at first boot i've to reset 2 time to log in EC. It's because of memory map issues, and i think only a good optiodrv will solve it.
No other suggestions for your next step. PS. why do you need additional drives?

To run the large amount of sample programs. We have hollywood orchestra (700GB), spitfire audio, toontrack and many other virtual instruments.

I suggest you to use an external USB/Thunderbolt drive to use samples...SSD's life will decrease if you will use intensly with read/write operations like with SAMPLES.
If you will install 4 SSD create a raid 0...it's not secure because if a ssd will fault you will lose data on that disk, but it's more fast if you will use it with samples.
I use to work with libraries and vst ann external TB2 raid Lacie...i prefer to use SSD just for osx and the second one for windows.

Are you serious ? I thought that SSD's had really made leaps and bounds forwards as far as performance and lifespan were concerned.... And the Samsungs are supposed to be some of the best performing SSD's out there...

SSD are of course faster than HDDs but their life depends of the daily usage. When you use sample more than a vst your disk will be stressed by loading large amount of samples especially if you will use huge libraries like orchestral, piano etc. A better and safe solution would be to set up a RAID 0+1 so that 2 disks will be the mirror of the other 2. This is the best way to keep your data. With Yosemite's Disk Utility you can create a raid easily, but with EC, I think, with new Disk Utility app you cannot, and you've to manage it through Terminal. There are useful apps to create a RAID under EC..I suggest you to search here or Google.

PS. WOW Apogee Ensemble TB is my dream...but maybe you own a great studio and not an home studio like mine...I'm with Presonus 16.0.2 Firewire, and I will upgrade to Apollo or RME in the next year...
