if you are referring to the odd characters in the output file I provided, I think it's because I used iTerm2's session log function and all the colored font was also recorded.
(a simple > redirect doesn't seem to work )

after a little digging, I found a little trick that works: |& tee -a

kextcache -i should look something like:

That output is from 10.13.6, but last I checked nothing has changed so drastically as is shown by your kextcache output.

I ran the same command from recovery (only replaced / with my actual mac volume) and got the same results. I'd guess apple has indeed changed the usage.

Running from recovery is not what is requested in the FAQ.
Must collect PR files by booting the main partition, not recovery.
