For that reason I swapped my Sierra installed SSD back to my Yosemite SSD, I was hogging at 30mins for a 1:30 min clip. CC2017 AE / AME under Yosemite minced it under 3 minutes (running an old X58 Gigabyte board with a Xeon)

Not sure which version of AE you are using, but you might check under Preferences "MEMORY + MULTIPROCESSING" to make sure all cores are activated and alloted enough RAM for rendering/previewing.
BUT there is always NATRON, the open-souce Video-Compositer which has advanced in leaps and bounds! You might want to try that, free at https://natron.fr/
