[Guide - Success] P5Q Pro Turbo, Q8200 Quad, GeForce GT240, 8GB Kingston Ram, Mountain Lion 10.8.X

Hi all,

I just thought i would share what i have done to get my system working with OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.X, so people with similar builds could use this as a guide and also help each other out with other problems that may occur.

Well 1st of all this is my system:

Motherboard - P5Q Pro Turbo
Processor - Q8200 Quad Core (3.2GHz Over-clocked)
Memory - 8 GB 860 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
GPU - GeForce GT240 1024MB
Kingston 128GB V200 SSD
Seagate Barracuda 250GB 7200RPM (Which i use for Time Machine backups)
TP-Link PCI Express Wifi Adapter TL-WDN4800 (Works Natively)
Belkin F8T017 Bluetooth adaptor (Works Natively)
Apple Magic Mouse
Apple Magic Trackpad
Apple Wireless Keyboard
Samsung SyncMaster 205 BW Display 1670 x 1050
Sony SRS D21 2.1-channel multimedia speaker/sub system

So lets begin:

Most parts are taken from Tony's Guide and edited to suite P5Q Pro Turbo owners.

You will need already downloaded:

UniBeast 3.0.1 (or latest version)
Multibeast Mountain Lion 5.5.3 (or latest version)
My DSDT file and Kext files that are attacthed to this post

STEP 1: Download OSX Mountain Lion
The operating system is not free. Purchase and download the Application from the Mac App Store using an Apple ID on any Mac or functional computer running OS X 10.6.6 or later.

STEP 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive Using UniBeast 3.0.1 (or latest version)
Take a deep breath and take your time- this is pretty simple, but it's easy to miss things if you rush. Follow each step to the letter.

1. Insert the USB drive
2. Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
3. Highlight the USB drive in left column
4. Click on the Partition tab
5. Click Current and choose 1 Partition
6. Click Options...
7. Choose Master Boot Record
8. Under Name: type USB
9. Under Format: choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
10. Click Apply then Partition
11. Run UniBeast 3.0.1 (or latest version)
12. Click Continue, Continue, Continue, Agree
13. At Destination Select, choose USB and click Continue
14. Choose Mac App Store Mountain Lion - 10.8
15. Enter password and click Install
This process took me about 30 mins, but it depends how fast your USB is so it could be faster/slower.

STEP 3: Install Mountain Lion
My BIOS is set to default apart from my over-clock which i left as it was, then set your Hard-drive to AHCI mode.

1. Turn on the computer
2. Press F8 to choose boot device
3. Choose your USB that you created with Unibeast.
4. At the Chimera Boot Screen, choose USB and type PCIRootUID=0 and press enter.
If you have trouble reaching the installer, type -x at the Boot screen as shown below. You can type the boot flags GraphicsEnabler=Yes, PCIRootUID=1, PCIRootUID=0, and npci=0x3000 by themselves or together in order to solve boot issues for older graphics cards and machines. Type -v to bypass the Apple boot screen and enter verbose startup mode. For further explanations of boot flags, check out the post http://tonymacx86.blogspot.co.uk/2010/04/iboot-multibeast-install-mac-os-x-on.html
5. When you arrive at the Installer, choose language.
6. For a new installation of OS X, you MUST format the destination drive according to the following steps before continuing.
NOTE: If you are upgrading from Snow Leopard or Lion and you want to keep your files and apps, you can skip steps a-j.

a. In the top menu bar choose Utilities, and open Disk Utility
b. Highlight your target hard drive for the Mountain Lion installation in left column.
c. Click Partition tab
d. Click Current and choose 1 Partition
e. Click Options...
f. Choose GUID Partition Method
g. Under Name: type Mountain Lion
h. Under Format: choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
i. Click Apply then Partition
j. Close Disk Utility

7. When the installer asks you where to install, choose Mountain Lion, or your existing install.
8. Upon completion, restart the system.

STEP 4: Post-Installation Using MultiBeast

1. Turn on the computer
2. Press F8 to choose boot device
3. Choose your USB that you created with Unibeast it will then display Chimera boot screen again
4. At the Chimera Boot Screen, choose your new Mountain Lion installation (Hard drive).
Remember to boot using PCIRootUID=0. (Or whatever boot flag combination that worked for you to get to the installation screen)
5. Complete Mac OS X Mountain Lion setup (don't setup WiFi yet). After setup you should arrive at your desktop (you can now eject your Unibeast USB).
6. Get my DSDT.aml file (you will need to unzip it 1st) and place it on your desktop (this DSDT is working with the latest BIOS version for our P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard).
7. Open and run Multibeast Mountain Lion 5.5.3 (or latest version)
Click continue, continue, continue, agree. Choose UserDSDT and select my DSDT file from your desktop.
All i had to select from Drivers were Trim Enabler due to my SSD (we will install network and sound later using kexts). This part is going to be different for everybody depending on your system, so select any further drivers you may need to enable your graphics etc.
8. Click Continue then Install
9. Once Multibeast has finished restart your system, this time your system should boot on its own straight into Mountain Lion.
10. Now we need to get Network and Sound working, so get the 2 kexts that are attached AtherosL1eEthernet.kext & VoodooHDA VT1708S.kext (the VoodooHDA VT1708S.kext has been patched for the P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard, so features like keyboard volume works etc).
11. I use Kext Utility to install my kexts but use whichever program you want. I had to delete the appleHDA.kext due to kernal panics so i would recommend doing that before installing the 2 kexts, you will find it in /System/Library/Extensions folder. With Kext Utility all i did was drag and drop the 2 kext files onto the Kext Utility icon and then Kext Utility did the rest. Once it has finished restart your machine.
12. When you are back at your desktop open System Preferences and click on sound. On output tab select your desired output (I use Line-out (Green Rear). You should find that you now have sound and you can also adjust the volume with your keyboard etc.
13. Now while you are still in System Preferences click on Network. Now click on create a new service (the + icon) and select Interface: Ethernet, then Service Name (I just left it as ethernet) then click create. If you are using ethernet then you are now done, if you are using WiFi like me click on create a new service (the + icon) and do the same for your WiFi (this will only work if your WiFi Natively works in OSX) then just configure your wireless connection. NOTE: even if you are going to use WiFi you must create your ethernet settings 1st otherwise you will have problems signing into iCloud, App Store, iTunes, FaceTime etc. If you accidentally set up WiFi 1st then you will need to delete NetworkInterfaces.plist which you can find in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/NetworkInterfaces.plist. Then create your connections again (ethernet connection 1st and then your WiFi connection 2nd).

All done you should now have a stable 10.8.X OSX Mountain Lion custom build, so far everything seems to be working fine.

Please leave any comments/questions about this guide (good or bad) and i will reply (Please don't PM me as if the questions get answered in this topic it may help other people). Also leave any comments on how this guide may have helped you, even if you have done things differently.

Thanks

Andy.

Thanks for the great guide!

I have a very similar build. Here are my specs:

Mobo: Asus P5Q Pro Turbo
CPU: Intel Core2 Quad Q8300 (2.5 GHz)
Mem: 8GB DDR2 (667) (OCZ and Mushkin)
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4890
HD: Samsung 128GB SSD
HD: WD Caviar Black 1TB

I have never been able to boot using Unibeast or iBoot. I do have a current install of 10.7.4 but had to use a custom built ISO which is the only thing I've ever been able to boot. I have 10.7 and 10.8 on my MBP and have tried almost every method I can find to create a bootable USB installer. I've also tried all bootflags, custom kernels, etc. Needless to say, I'm at a loss.

It appears that the system instantly reboots whenever the kernel loads (right after all kexts are scanned/loaded). I ended up discovering this when I recorded the bootup process with my phone and checked frame-by-frame on the video. The system reboots too fast to see any messages otherwise.

I'm not giving up, but if anyone else has encountered similar problems, I'd love to hear how they resolved it. If and when I find the solution I'll post it here.

Yes I have used PCIRootUID=0. Still the same result. :(

I had some new ideas today to try out later tonight, including taking some RAM out. I also remember reading at one time that some boards are picky about which SATA ports are used for HDs. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the link btw.
