Sounds like you need to wait for the usb version of OS X Lion and start fresh?

There are many guides out there on how to do the install fresh with the GM version, as the App store version has all the same functionality the same guides will work.
This is how I did my Dell M1530, I have the old SL install running alongside the new Lion install that is completely fresh and vanilla.

As soon as I downloaded Lion from the apple store I made a backup copy of it
That way I can use it again if I need to.
