I am attempting to install Catalina 10.15.7 for the first time.

I'm able to boot into OC and start install from usb as normal. Then reboot to Installer. Then reboot to my SSD (named SSD).
Upon booting to SSD, I'm taken to recovery where "Install Catalina" is now "Reinstall Catalina."

If I hit "Reinstall", at 2 minutes remaining I get error "Could not create a preboot volume for APFS install"

diskutil command shows that a preboot volume already exists in the SSD volume.

All I can find online is folks with Apple hardware attempting to upgrade. People say reformatting drive to Mac OS Extended and starting over helped them. This did not work for me. Disconnecting all other drives didn't help.

Using a Samsung EVO 970 Plus. I heard about compatibility issues. Tried a different SSD, same problem.
Was using a vanilla copy of Catalina downloaded from Apple. Started over using gibMacOS per Dortania's guide, same problems.
Might try 10.15.6 next...

Maybe it's the mobo? My config is from a working hack with same mobo and similiar GPU. Happy to share if needed. Any help would be appreciated!

SOLVED: I did two things in one reboot:

Booted from USB in recovery, mounted entire installed volume, and ran
diskutil apfs updatePreboot Volumes/SSD

Then upon reboot, I reset the NVRAM (it was probably this.)
