It's my first hackintosh and I installed ML hassle free - everything works out the box and I saw no panics or errors - all software installed, cuda working yadda yadda- however when it comes to updates - should I install them or stay well clear?

It depends on your mobo and what you did to make it work.
If you are not using modified kexts for base functions, you don't have a high risk.
Anyway, allway a risk... Need to make a backup or to have feedback for community.

I didn't do much at all just on z77 ds3h with a 3570k and gcard works out the box so just did the unibeast install and it was all fine. sounds like im low risk but like you say best having a backup which is good as i write a carbon copy cloner file once a week

cheers

Normally you should not have big risk. I think, I am in the same situation and I will not be afraid of updating from Apple.
We had already in the past FakeSMC.kext no longer compatible with a new version (I think it was with SL), and I had to use my backup...
