I used the step-by-step advice on Lnx2Mac's Blog to build my first silent PC. It's very quiet compared to what I had before.

Here are the components I used:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD4
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003FOIRY4?ie=UTF8

CPU: Intel Core i7-860 2.8GHz
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002KQ5KE8?ie=UTF8

CPU Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B (Model SCMG-2100)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OCPRQ0?ie=UTF8

RAM: G.SKILL ECO 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 (Model F3-12800CL7D-4GBECO)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0030MNLSS?ie=UTF8

Graphics Card: GIGABYTE GV-N98TSL-1GI GeForce 9800 GT 1GB Silent Cell
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002U0KEPY?ie=UTF8

Hard Disk Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001U3S5S0?ie=UTF8

These are the different parts used due to unavailability:
Optical Disk: Sony-Optiarc AD-7260S 24X DVD+R SATA
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MRHOQG?ie=UTF8

Case: Antec Sonata III 500 (with 500W PSU)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QAVVAM?ie=UTF8

Display: SAMSUNG SyncMaster XL2270 21.5" 2ms Widescreen 1920x1080 LCD Monitor
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ARSZ0C?ie=UTF8

Keyboard: Plain USB

If you never built a PC before, you'll find his blog indispensable.

Thanks Anthony...

I'm the one who should be thanking you for your detailed posts. It took me 2 whole afternoons to put it together, and I wouldn't have even attempted it if your blog didn't exist.

The only minor issue with my Sonata case is that the on/off button is behind a little door and opening it up every day was a pain -- until I found a bios option that allows a PS2 keyboard to turn on the PC. So I replaced my USB keyboard and installed VoodooPS2Controller, which didn't work until I removed VoodooPS2Mouse.kext and VoodooPS2Trackpad.kext.

Maybe MultiBeast should have this as an option for users with a PS2-keyboard and USB-mouse.

Anyway, thanks again.
