This seems to be the very problem I am having and I can go into the UEFI shell and see the list of drives, and it even lets me type "map FS#" but then when I type ls, it just says current directory not specified. Is there a step I am missing?

Is there any way to return to my normal boot actually loading and say screw it to the update for now? I’m resigned to formatting if I have to but I would really rather not.

I am using the keyboard successfully to navigate clover and then select verbose and safe, then it brings me to the exact same screen I’ve gotten the past few times.

Not to be dumb, but I don’t think that’s it. I was using the arrow keys a second earlier to navigate through clover and then there’s no typing once I’m in this screen. I’ll try though.

Went to the final link you posted with the long helpful looking walkthrough, but step 1 doesn’t work for me, which is to map the drives, because even after I do that, I can’t cd to any of them. It’s seems like they don’t exist....

It is an i7 4771 haswell and motherboard is gigabyte GA-787X-UD3H-LGA Yes I did update clover before trying to upgrade to high sierra.
