A NAS will be a much better solution. The problem with plugging a USB hard drive into a router, is that it will be limited by the USB 2.0 port speed on the router (even USB 3.0 won't rectify this), which is considerably slower than Gigabit ethernet (which most newer NASs have) and also, routers...
