I just bought the arctic silver 5, did a strip a little thinner than a grain of rice and spread it down the center, and I'm still idling at 40 C. Can someone maybe give me the rundown on how to apply thermal paste and a heatsink because I'm clearly doing something wrong here.

My i7 950 idles at 50 celsius through istat menu 2. Now is there anyway istat is bugged out because all this tinkering around, or did I eff up my cpu installation? I'm running the customac build so I'm cooling with the Mugen 2 on the ud3r in the haf 922.
