Somewhat solved.
When I boot using "-f" flags I am able to both shut down/restart.
Am trying to solve the fact I have to boot with "-f" to ignore the kernel cache in a different thread: http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/152057-boot-error-bug-process-suhelperd-156-over-released.html
Deleted System/Library/AppleTyMCEDriver.kext as per http://www.tonymacx86.com/general-help/132029-sound-assertion-applehdacodecgeneric-line-kernal-panic-stuff-help.html
But no help. Still seeing sound assertion errors. Down to 3 errors however.
My sound set up is as follows:

Rebuilding the cache did not work. I received the same "BUG in process subhelperd..." and was not able to boot up the OS when I booted with only "-v" as a boot flag.
I now have 4 lines right before "BUG in process subhelperd" that read something like:
"Sound assertion in AppleHDACodecGeneric...
I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and am still unravelling some problems. I'm currently able to reach Yosemite only when I boot using "-f". Apparently this ignores the Kernel Cache which makes for a slower start up.
Photos of my results when booting using only "-v" are below:

OK some of the messages/errors during the "-v -f" boot up I'm seeing are:

"Kernel = __SYNTAB" not a kext

(Update)
My problems with boot up was caused by a separate issue (I had a USB hub plugged in at the back with a standard, not formatted as a bootable drive, flash drive stuck in it). I have removed the USB flash drive entirely and am able to reach the Chimera screen with 100% consistency.

Ok, unless I have Customize > Boot Options > Use KernelCache installed using MultiBeast I run into real problems getting back into Yosemite on start up.
Sometimes I don't get to the (Chimera?) boot screen, I only get past the BIOS loading screen and then see a black screen with a single _ or |...
Thanks Eddy - I tried your UseKernelCache=No on boot screen and was able to boot up successfully AND shut down fully using the normal, menu driven Shut Down... command
Based on that, I loaded up Yosemite again, reopened my MultiBeast settings and unchecked

Have run a fairly stable "MacMini" system for 18 months and have just upgraded to Yosemite (skipping Mavericks entirely). Unfortunately I'm now experiencing a restart/shutdown problem.
After much research on these forums I feel like I'm more lost than I was to begin with. Other users seem to...
Hi, I'm a first time Hackintosh owner and a long time Mac user. Almost 4 weeks ago I pulled together my savings (the main reason I went for a Hackintosh is that I can't afford a Mac Pro and my last iMac wasn't powerful enough after the first year to game/run multiple Adobe Creative Suite apps)...
