@Kahn, curiously enough, my new install doesn't have an /Extra folder in the root of the drive – but...

Indeed, I made both the USB in Legacy mode, and installed Unibeast in Legacy mode. It still doesn't work.

I built my Hackintosh from scratch late 2012 (with Mountain Lion), and it looks like it's time to upgrade to El Capitan. I built it a few years ago, so I've forgotten much of what I did then to get it running; but it ran with boot flags 'npci=0x3000...
