The NVS 510's were about $33 (on average), but that was in late 2019. I'm expecting to stop with updates for the SFF's at Big Sur, personally, but I might take the 9020 MT's (with RX 570/580's) on to Monterey. Maybe. Simple is good.
(and gotcha about used/new being for the PSU, I mis-read that)
Seems that WX 2100 seller "wazno" now lists only used WX 2100 on both Amazon and eBay (AFAICT), but it's still likely a pretty good choice.
I'm back after a long break to refresh my OptiMacs, and looked at the WX 2100 versus the NVS 510, of which I have several. The WX 2100 is about three...
No, it’s more like pry tools very much discouraged.
A pic is worth a thousand words... I’ll pop another one tonight and capture it a bit better.
There are several easy ways to kill a motherboard when playing with CPU brackets and/or mounting CPU coolers, and I want to warn people of a few.
(sorry I've been MIA, pesky wildfires)
@gurnemanz, I'd say you're getting some really good advice. As @lcann25 said, try it! It may well be quiet enough in stock config. OTOH, I also use these as audio workstations (and for VSTs/AUs/Ableton/etc.). So, it can't ever be too cool or too quiet...
Too true! At six units, I said to my buddy with the teens, "Somebody stop me!". And in his best Gene Wilder deadpan, he looked at me and said:
"stop"
Wasn't very effective.
Kinda embarrassing. It's twelve. I'll get some pics up this week (or it didn't happen!)
Three 9020 MT's, three 9020 MT mobo's transplanted into standard ATX cases, two 9020 SFFs, one 9010 MT, and three 7010 MT's transplanted into my buddy's kid's Socket775-era cases. A couple are...
Can confirm... it’s surprising, but true.
I was testing a batch of RAM DIMMs on two 9020’s with only one monitor, by using a DP->DVI cable on one 9020, and the monitor’s VGA port for the other 9020. That way they could both be running MemTest86 at the same time (takes a couple of hours).
Then...
As some folks have covered in other threads, there are more than a few oddities. The good news: it IS a standard layout for the motherboard mounting screws & rear I/O Shield. So getting it physically mounted into a standard case is easy.
OTOH, the power supply connector and fan connectors are...
Certainly, can-do... I transplanted a 9020 MT mobo (with a i5-4690S running HD 4600) into an Antec quiet-case, if that's of any interest to the thread. One thing I can't help too much with is 4K resolution testing, as I don't have a 4K screen. Could borrow a 4K 'TV/monitor' from work, though...
Sure! In a nutshell, for everyday web-browsing/docs/email/news/YouTube/iTunes/etc. They both are quite snappy, and I don't really feel much of a difference. Most of my setups use two screens; main screen in Landscape orientation in front, secondary screen in Portrait mode off to the side. The...
I have a different RX580 (seems like they don't necessarily act exactly alike) and different monitors/cables, so my experience has been a bit different than @bulbmkr's. Mine does wake with the same symptoms (see post #703 for his video). So for the 9020's using integrated-graphics or NVS510...
Heh, my experience almost exactly, except that you beat my $31 9010 MT (plus gas), dang it! Seriously, these things are such amazing values, it's redunkulous. Warning: it can get addictive, finding well-performing/solidly-built computers for a handful of dollars, that you can give to friends...
Yes, many rivets, and also a bunch of spots where the bracket metal has been punched into the surrounding panels and flared. So even once you get the rivets removed, it's still really secured. And it's not easy to get metal shavings out from all the unavoidable nooks and crannies. Best to not...
@bulbmkr ...
Wow, that's some next-level voodoo you have going on there! I'll experiment with your approach.
Before you spend money on a keyboard, I really do suggest that you ask around (friends, IT folks @ work) as USB keyboards are kinda 'a dime a dozen' these days.
Generally, my best...
Quick update: With the RX580 I mentioned, the 4790 machine does run fine with the Enable Legacy Option ROMs either checked, or unchecked. Boots to desktop, seems to have acceleration, and will shutdown. And it does get to sleep with Legacy Option checked. However when it wakes it has a...
My RX 580 is the MSI ARMOR 8G OC (I think it was you who posted a mid-June pointer to the super-deal with rebate?). It's not currently in a machine, but I could try a specific setup for you and report back, if you like. I'll try the 580 again in a well-performing setups which has "Enable...
Still pursuing a consistent/predicatable "always works" Sleep recipe. Not there yet, but here's a few observations.
My most stable settings (so far) always have BIOS --> General --> Advanced Boot Options --> Enable Legacy Option ROMs" checked (which may be somewhat non-standard, from what I'm...
