just did a direct upgrade and having this same issue! multibeast doesn't even see the main drive, and clover install fails ... more research is needed :)
I have been battling this since beta - the installer never loads -- IT DOEDS if I use IGPU and have second monitor connected to raedon r9 280x, but shows only 512 MB of video ram.
I have the raedon r9 280x as well, and can't get to the installer - it did book with IGPU enabled in bios, but then with inject intel, I only get 512 MB of video ram :(
that is what I had to do -- with both on I have dvi from motherboard to a monitor, then another monitor to the AMD card -- but as I say I am only seeing 512MB of ram in the about this mac section. my derp moment -- I am just trying to figure out what the change was from 10.12.6 to 10.13 -- frame...
I'm having the same issue. r9 280x - I use dual DVI - and can't boot to the installer unless I set to uiGPU - which is intel 3000 and I only get 512MB of video ram.

was doing a clean install. was trying to figure out the best approach for the update, I hoped I could be from the app store as I've been lucky that way so far. any of you awesome people have the terminal command to install to an external USB drive named USB :)
