You are best to first make a decision as to what particular graphics card you want. Then research into the distro before purchase to make sure other hackintoshes express their success etc. ;)

What you have experienced is a common experience with most users. Don't be deterred by it. What you need to do is boot into Leopard safemode then simply add support for your card manually with a few pre-edited kext, and maybe add a Graphic ID string into com.apple.Boot.plist (Root/Extra/ folder)...
