I don't think there is a big difference between mini disportport and displayport. One is just the mini version of the other. However, since mini displayport is the one that apple uses on their Macbooks, Mac Pro, iMac and Mac Minis, so if you have the money then invest in the mini displayport...

I have the exact same model as you and experienced the same issue. I found out later that the problem is the HDMI port. You will have to use the DVI port if you want the Saphire Radeon HD 6870 to be recognised and fully functioning. What's causing the dvd player and steam game to crash is indeed...
