addenda..my P55 has no ssds and 10.13.6 is hfs+ not apps... so each reboot is about 2 minutes..today it took 5 reboots to get audio recognised..but i suppose if you have an M2 and..some patience PCI cards could well be recognised..and the last one this time was reboot verbose run kext utility 2...
not quite sure what went wrong there...anyway i have managed to get sound working without the "unpleasant noise" as you put it...on 10.13.6 with delta 1010LT pci card..my P55 has multiple systems but using clover 4871 and right clicking on clover to add debug kexts (last box to tick)...then run...

sorry for the late reply i have been working away with my head down...the 22 seems to run fine here although i don't watch much you tube ..my gigabyte P55 UD3L has alc888 and this is probably different on your board but this should not be critical ..i did remain on 10.6.7 in snow leopard...
pci cheap and with in and out 16/ 24bit lowest latency m-audio delta 66 m-audio delta1010LT and terratec cards using same chip all run flawlessy in pci also with UAD-1 pci card(64bit with with 32bit efi in chameleon(i386)
a large number of old m-audio cards seem to work with the appropriate envy 24 drivers without many problems although the midi inputs do not connect and you may need a seperate usb midi in/out have added the one i use on snow and lion
