What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

It surely is. You're right to point out that the possibility of a both a Hackintosh and of running Windows natively on a Macintosh only arose because Apple started using clearly Windows-compatible standard hardware. The "Apple Silicon" concept more resembles historical systems like SGI/MIPS or...

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

Apple is already American and so is Intel, so no change in conditions for using ARM.

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

I doubt that anyone in sales and marketing at Intel would think like that. A customer is a customer. You win some, you lose some, you win some back.

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

Dead right. Intel has lost a reasonable chunk of desktop and, particularly, mobile CPU sales by losing Apple. Their market position has not been in the best shape lately with AMD's resurgence in gaming and HEDT. Intel could have done without this.

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

I don't think the NVIDIA deal is a particular threat to Apple, at least not short/medium term. The issue that regulators will have to grapple with is that of the 500 or so ARM licensees, many (most according to Hermann Hauser, an ARM co-founder) will be in sectors where they might be competing...

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

But it is a geopolitical debate, like it or not. You've got voices in the UK calling for the UK government to intervene for geopolitical reasons and the DOJ and FTC will have motives that are clearly related to US strategic interests. Multi-billion dollar foreign investments get political in a...

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

And do you think Trump is more likely to listen to Cook or to Roger Stone, who wants Cook locked up? The USA is engaged in a geopolitical strategy, probably bi-partisan, to reverse or at least contain China's growing influence in key technologies including AI, a key NVIDIA specialty...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

I get a black screen if I don't use WEG.

    Mac Pro on apple silicon?

They were taught a lesson, though, by the Trashcan experience in that some pro use cases really require PCIe expansion and not via thunderbolt. The Xeon is actually still a very compelling option for a Mac Pro, partly because of PCIe capacity so it will be interesting to see how Apple tackles...

    Mac Pro on apple silicon?

Apple does have plenty form on this when doing the 68K-to-PPC transition and then PPC-to-Intel transition. During the first transition they carried a much (much!) larger range of models to now and some Power Macs did turn up in the same clothes as previous 68K models. Then of course the original...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

I put the RadeonBoost kext in, via "kexts/other" in Clover but couldn't see any difference in performance. It's config-only so it's a bit hard to know whether it was even active. One thing I've observed for a while is that very few processes really get the fans going on the MSI Vega 56, with...

Thanks for all that. I'll give it a spin when I get a chance.

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

Just a reminder: I didn't set out to replace the 1080ti, which I was happy with. I needed to go to Mojave and the GPU downgrade was collateral damage. If you mean I could have used a 64 then, true, but I know that the 64 still would be inferior to the 1080ti. I also can't use the Vega 64 that I...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

I wanted a configuration that actually matched a shipping iMac Pro (for no good reason) so the choice came down to a Vega 56 or Vega 64 FE but I don't really need 16GB of VRAM which in any case would require me to add more system RAM due to Autodesk Smoke requirements. I actually have a Vega 64...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

@scottkendall A couple of points to clarify Firstly I doubt that you and I are in disagreement about very much, just a couple of things. To amplify my point about the 2013 Mac Pro and relating it to my view about Apple's GPU problems: At around about the 2012-2014 period it became noticeable...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

Nothing about my posts should lead to that conclusion. There's no memory loss. Of course they have that control. Their actions in exercising that control have consequences to users. In this case the Mac user base is denied the ability to use the indisputably superior GPU architecture that is...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

Is it as simple as that? As much as we can know anything about this imbroglio it seems that Apple wants to have active input into the development of the driver and NVIDIA is not prepared to accede to this. That is their right. You could say that this means that they share responsibility with...

Debate - NVidia, AMD and Apple

I agree completely that the drivers under HS were pretty crappy. Nevertheless in my particular case when I swapped out my 1080ti for a Vega 56 in order to move to Mojave it was on balance a downgrade. Resolve performance under CUDA was superior to that under Metal and considerably superior to...

What is the impact on Apple if NVIDIA were to buy ARM?

I understand the sentiment behind this but I don't see NVIDIA as the victim in this as much as Apple's customers. It's deeply problematic that the best GPU technology is barred from the platform and it calls into question the whole notion of the Mac as a serious high-end professional option...
