This reproducibly breaks my installation. Can only be fixed by restoring an old config.plist.

I changed that. Now I see the boot menu, after that, the Apple logo for about a second and then the screen goes black. That's it. I restored the "wrong" config.plist from yesterday and I can boot back into OS X without problems.
