I had the same issue with my Mountain Lion system (Gigabyte motherboard and AMD6870 graphics card) and it was seriously starting to annoy me. Freezes occured on all versions of OSX.
I completely solved the freeze on my system by enabling the following features in Multibeast (see last three...
Re: Guide - New ATI Kexts from MBP 10.6.7 Update - 5XXX/6XXX
Due to popular demand, I upgraded my Gigabyte X58 BIOS to FF. Here is the Rev FF Gigabyte X58A-UDR-REV2 .aml file with the Duckweed framebuffer for the 6870.
Recommended steps:
1. Copy this file to your /Extra directory
2. At the...
Re: Guide - New ATI Kexts from MBP 10.6.7 Update - 5XXX/6XXX
I followed NotShy's guide and my 6870 is performing flawlessly with the Duckweed framebuffer. GeekBench and DVD Player are both working now. I'm attaching my compiled DSDT for the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R rev 2 - FE motherboard with...
Did you get any flickering in your display? At 1080p resolution, i had annoying screen flicker with my 5870 until I added AtiConfig=Nomascus to my boot profile.
Sounds like you have an excellent card though and it would be interesting to see the Cinebench scores with a 2GB 5870.

I switched to the ATI 5870 and I'm 100% stable with no freezes now. System up time is approaching 1 week which includes entering/exiting sleep mode in 64-bit. So I'd say go with an ATI 57x or 58x card and try to stay as close the reference design as possible. You can get some good prices on...
I created a separate partition just for making a backup of the working OSX installs. I then use Carbon Copy to make an occasional full backup of my OSX partition. That has saved my bacon more than once. The backups are fully bootable with Chameleon. For example, I have a 2 TB drive with 1TB...
Re-reading the DSDT was a good idea but alas! It did not help the flicker.
I might have found the right frame buffer setting, however.
For one thing, the correct key to set is AtiConfig and not AtiFb (AtiFb was deprecated).
AtiConfig=Nomascus might have done the trick. Nomascus is a fairly...
An update:
I'm still getting some screen flicker although it's tolerable. If anyone has a flicker-free 5870 install, I'd love to hear how you accomplished it.

With no resolution in sight for the Nvidia Fermi OSX system freezes, i decided to bite the bullet and purchase an ATI/AMD graphics card. I had a very nice MSI Hawk GTX460 that gave me excellent OC'd performance in Windows and was a breeze to install on my Hackintosh - except for the highly...
I'm sorry to report that my system still freezes after a period of use. It's less so but still at least once a day. I think it's time to switch video cards.

It sounds like good news for some except for poor Pote2639. I'm of the same opinion, not wanting to replace my MSI Hawk GTX460. I really like this card and its OC capability on my Win7 partition. I won't be able to do full-out workplace testing until next week when I return home so it would be...
The common thread on the freeze seems to be an idle system so I looked through my Gigabyte UDR3 BIOS settings and remembered enabling two power management settings that are normally disabled by default (but enabled in the recommended OSX BIOS settings links). They are:
CPU Enhanced Halt -> Now...
I have the same board and was fooling around with my Ethernet drivers when I encountered a similar issue (no Ethernet on either my OSX or Win7 partitions). Try these things:
1.First thing to try is power off your system and completely unplug the power cord, then let the system sit for 3-5...
Here are my OC'd I7-950, GTX460 results on the same system comparing Win7-64 vs. OSX-64. You can see OSX gives you a slight edge on the CPU score but the Win7 OpenGL score is much better.
Re: 64-bit kernel eluding me (Gigabyte A-X58A-UD3R with GTX460)
I have completed a full iBoot/MultiBeast re-install of OSX and I have 64-bit sweetness!
I followed this installation thread (viewtopic.php?f=81&t=11221) with the only issue being that my 10.6.3 Snow Leopard DVD would hang...
Re: 64-bit kernel eluding me (Gigabyte A-X58A-UD3R with GTX460)
Thanks for the tips. I came upon MultiBeast after I had already built my Hackintosh to a mostly functional state, so even though I now have a MultiBeast install, it looks like there are some legacy drivers left over from a...
Re: 64-bit kernel eluding me (Gigabyte A-X58A-UD3R with GTX460)
Update: Here are the kernel extensions in my Extras folder. I've removed most of these at one time or another with no change in the kernel panic:
SleepEnabler
FakeSMC
SuperIOFamily
IntelThermal
JMicron36xSATA...
Hi Everyone,
I have a 100% functioning OS X 10.6.6 system with the exception of being stuck in a 32-bit kernel. All efforts to switch to a 64-bit kernel result in a kernel panic that seems to center around AppleACPIPlatform.kext.
I've followed the BIOS settings and installation guides on this...
