Be careful, because retina iMacs don't support Target Display Mode. See this article https://appleinsider.com/articles/17/06/15/2017-4k-5k-imacs-wont-support-target-display-mode-despite-thunderbolt-3 for a list of the iMac models that do support it.
As I understand it, the protocols just didn't...
Actually, here's one made by VisionTek, not MSI: https://www.visiontek.com/rx560-4m-4gb-gddr5-graphics-card.html (I'm not wild about all the mini-displayport.)
I'm still curious about 2GB RX 560 low-profile cards. Do they exist? If they did exist, would they be good in a hackintosh?
Cool. I didn't know there was an updated 6300/8300 guide. Thanks for doing that.
I am planning to reinstall on an Elite 8300 I had done long ago and figured I'd have to use an older guide and make adjustments. But that's not the case.
Actually, I now have two 8300/6300 SFF machines to do...
The instructions seem to indicate that Sierra's MultiBeast should be used for HighSierra post-installation, but it's not super clear. However Stork's post #122 in that would seem to confirm it.
However I'm having trouble with that part, so perhaps I'm not interpreting these posts correctly.
Thanks for writing this, because the changelog for Multibeast for Sierra says, "MultiBeast 9.1.0: Sierra Edition is ONLY for OS X 10.12.x." I had been doubting that using it for High Sierra 10.13 was the correct thing to do.
I was able to create the bootable thumb drive just fine, but have...
I didn't look closely, but it seems like it should work fine. You'll need to pick a motherboard that has decent compatibility with macOS.
I have that same GT 740 graphics card and I couldn't get it to work right in El Capitan without installing the nVidia web drivers. I might have chosen a...
Well that's certainly true. It was vieve who started the thread. I found it via search and didn't even realize it was in the buying advice section. Sorry about that.
If it's true that some GT740 cards require more than stock drivers, though, then that is something that might be worth discussing...
After taking a month off, I'm taking another crack at replacing the 9500 GT with the GT 740 (EVGA GT 740SC 2gb DDR3).
The rebooting issue hasn't returned, which is good, but the card is identified as "NVIDIA Chip Model 2048 MB," which I take to mean (though I'm not sure) that acceleration is...
No screenshots, but I just took the time to transcribe all the BIOS settings.
These are BIOS settings for HP Elite 8300 SFF with firmware version K01 v02.99 (v2.99). I'm not saying these settings are "correct," but they do work for me with OSX 10.11.x "El Capitan."

update: success!
I tried so many things that it's hard to know exactly what was and what wasn't relevant. But I think the big thing that allowed the machine to boot from disk again was to re-run Multibeast, this time choosing UEFI Boot Mode instead of Legacy Boot Mode. (I guess this even sort...
What I don't understand is why trying to boot form the SATA hard drive's EFI partition and choosing the HFS OSX partition fails, but booting from the USB thumb drive's EFI partition and choosing the same HFS OSX partition succeeds. It seems to me that if the USB thumb drive can do it, then (with...
I had heard about that Audio MIDI Setup thing, too. Unfortunately it didn't help a whit.
I was, however, able to get rid of the white noise/crackling sound. What I did was go into the VoodooHDA control panel, which has two pull-down lists on the left. On my machine, the upper pull-down has "1...
You might want to look at something I posted (and its followups) on another thread.
I did make some progress with ALC221 audio on HP Elite 8300, but it's less than perfect. (update: It's close to perfect now)
There's also this other post by truthv7.
This thread inspired me to pick one of these up, however I got mine elsewhere, not at Newegg.
I also picked up a cheap GeForce GT 610 graphics card for it. You can find them for as little as $32, though I unfortunately paid a little more than that. (Mine is branded EVGA but I should have gone...
In my situation, where I'm replacing an old 9500 GT with a new GT 740, it seems I do have to worry about configuration. Simply swapping the cards and rebooting failed halfway through the progress bar below the apple. Turning of InjectNVidia allowed it to get all the way through booting and to...
Say I want to upgrade my existing 9500 GT to a GT 740. Can I just swap out the cards and reboot, or do I need to do some prep work with drivers and such?
FYI for those with similar hardware, this is how I eventually got it working.
1. I did decide to upgrade the mainboard's firmware to version 1703 (dated 2012/08/01).
2. Create a bootable USB stick as per the guide. Choose Legacy boot mode when Unibeast asks.
3. Reboot with F8 to boot...
