Dual booting on two separate m.2 drives

Oh, excellent! Thanks! I've just got too damn many drives to give up a precious SATA slot. Thanks. I'll give it a whirl.

Dual booting on two separate m.2 drives

I did end up with the Aorus Master, and I do indeed have Win 10 and Catalina dual booting successfully. (I swear I'll update my profile to reflect this new setup...). But a question for @jaymonkey: I followed your advice re: keeping the EFI on a separate small SATA drive. But would it be a very...

Dual booting on two separate m.2 drives

Thanks, @Going Bald! I'm still imperfectly wrapping my head around this stuff, but my research so far corroborates what you said: every board seems to trade something for m.2 slots beyond the first one. I've made a little table of the recommended Gigabyte boards after checking all their...

Dual booting on two separate m.2 drives

Thanks so much, @jaymonkey! That's extremely helpful. Originally I was looking at the Asus Maximus X Hero, but the specs delivered this troubling footnote: I now (think that I) understand that, on this board, two NVMe drives would disable SATA ports 5 and 6. That's a bad trade-off for me. I'm...

Dual booting on two separate m.2 drives

Hey, @jaymonkey , I’m gearing up for a new build (the old girl is starting to show her age), and I’d like to dual boot OS X and Win on m.2 drives as you have... but I have a couple of questions I wondered if you could help with... 1)It seems like in most cases, running two m.2 drives will...

[SOLVED] Copy of apfs.efi failed - please advise

Me three. Same error after successfully running through that terminal line. Edit: I had to download the most recent version of the Mojave installer - even though the version I had was pretty recent. For some reason that seems to have made all the difference. Hope that helps someone else.

Help me with a second monitor!

Sorry to respond to my own post; I added a couple of crude pictures of the problem I'm describing. I guess another way to phrase the same issue would be to say that the second monitor is still trying to run at 1024 x 768 when i want it to be running at 768 x 1024. Thanks again!

Help me with a second monitor!

I'm trying to run dual displays. My first one (HDMI-->DVI) works fine. I want the second one (Display Port --> VGA) to be vertical next to it. The problem, currently, is that when I go into system prefs and change the "Rotation" setting to 90 degrees, the image is oriented the right way, but the...

Help me pick the right RAM upgrade!

Hey. I'm still running the machine in my profile. The processor and mobo are old but capable, and what's consistently in short supply is free RAM. I have 8GB, and I want to double it. So I'm looking for 4 x 4GB modules. But I have some questions. Here are the specs for what the mobo can...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

@84mac, @Adrian B, @VoiletDragon Okay. I bit the bullet and bought a new card - a GTX 1060. Sure enough, it displays none of the problems I had before. It's up and running like a charm. I still have a couple of normal glitches to iron out - audio, messages, etc. - but I think we've found a...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

@84mac, @Adrian B, @VoiletDragon Okay. Further attempts: I (finally) burned an Ubuntu DVD. And I created a working Linux Mint USB stick. Using the DVD and the GTX 660, the machine will not boot at all. Using the Mint drive, the machine will only boot in Compatibility Mode. I tested the DVD on...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

No, no desktop. This is as far as I could get. The drive I created is probably no good, then. And the pink lines - as we've seen - are inconsistent. I thought it was worth documenting that they appeared in this case and not some others. I did not install drivers. I can try tonight. It seemed...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

Sorry for the delay, everyone. Besides the usual work stuff, I had my bike stolen last night, so I've been running around trying to track down security footage and the relevant police.... Anyway, here's the update: I recreated the Ubuntu boot drive using Rufus on one of the ancient Windows...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

Update: While struggling to get/make a bootable copy of Ubuntu, I happened upon a WinXP install disc. I installed that, and it definitely displays similar artifacts to the ones I had in Sierra. I suppose it's possible that windows XP is to blame somehow(?!), but this seems to me to corroborate...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

I finally got UNetBootin to successfully do its thing, but now booting stalls at this screen: The timer keeps resetting to ten seconds. Pressing Tab gives me a command line reading > /ubnkern initrd=/ubninit. That's all I can make it do now. I don't suppose this problem is as simple as...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

While I struggle with getting a bootable version of Ubunto going, I did some more experiments. I removed the gpu and tried popping it in a different PCI slot. Same results. Interestingly, the pink lines only appear on the first ASUS screen. After that, they disappear and everything looks...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

Embarrassingly, I am still struggling to make this happen. I was trying to put Ubuntu on a USB drive (the internet recommended UNetBootin), but that keeps failing. Sorry for the delay. Even the parts of this that're supposed to be easy are giving me grief. Is there an obvious solution here...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

Aw, no. That's the worst possible news. :( I did pull the battery out of the mobo and reset it (chose reset rather than load previous settings), but the pink lines persist. I created a new USB boot drive, and I'll try that now, but I'm not optimistic. Definitely don't know anyone with a...

GTX 660 underperforming in Sierra. Help?

Okay. It's later than I anticipated, but I'm gonna dive in and pull the battery. For posterity: my current BIOS build is indeed 1602. I can potentially try 1703 later. I still don't see a Serial option in BIOS. But I also don't see a PEG option for graphics - or any graphics options, really...
